About this product

Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) was never a celebrated virtuoso on an instrument, but submitted his skill on the harpsichord well, to succeed as a conductor of the Esterházy as a soloist in her concerts. Both harpsichord concertos recorded here probably date from the early days at the Esterházy. The CD will be supplemented by an early Divertimento from the 1750s, in the Haydn introduces himself as a young, extremely promising composer. Sigiswald Kuijken and La Petite Bande present us works from a time when Haydn was indeed no European size, but undoubtedly been one with which they had expected. Import Hybrid-SACD pressing.

La Petite Bande - Cantatas 18 70 9 & 182 - SUPER-AUDIO CD [Super Audio CD (SACD)]

Accent's acclaimed Cantata series featuring Sigiswald Kuijken and La Petite Bande concludes with volume eighteen. The disc offers works for the twenty-sixth Sunday after Trinity, the sixth Sunday after Trinity and Palm Sunday. Kuijken's cycle is notable for it's use of solo voices in place of a choir. Once highly controversial, this approach has gained traction in some musicological circles. Regardless of authenticity, the superb performances in this series deserve a wide audience and shed new light on familiar territory. Accent's Super Audio recordings also give the music an added depth and clarity not possible on a standard compact disc.

La Petite Bande - Cantatas for the Complete Liturgical Year 6 - SUPER-AUDIO CD [Super Audio CD (SACD)]

Bach Cantatas, BWV 179, 35, 164 & 17 (2007) Dominik Wörner (baritone), Ewald Demeyere (organ), Gerlinde Sämann (soprano), Jan Kobow (tenor), La Petite Bande, Petra Noskaiova (alto), Sigiswald Kuijken (conductor). Thankfully, Sigiswald Kuijken doesn't feel the overwhelming urge to record every extant sacred cantata by J. S. Bach. That project would have consumed years of his life - and at best only equaled the achievements of other, earlier explorers. By choosing to record only enough cantatas to span a single liturgical year of Sundays plus the major holy days, Kuijken has restricted the number of discs to 20, reduced the number of performers to one singer to a part, and exponentially increased the musical intensity. Volume five, this volume, includes the four cantatas for the 11th through 14th Sundays after Trinity Siehe zu, dass deine Gottesfurcht nicht Heuchelei sei, BWV 179; Geist und Seele wird verwirret, BWV 35; I hr, die ihr euch von Christo nennet, BWV 164; and Wer Dank opfert, der preiset mich, BWV 17. As with any four Bach cantatas, these are all very different from one another.
