Lady for a Night - BLU-RAY

The unlikely combination of John Wayne and Joan Blondell adds a bit of vinegar and spice to this wonderful costume comedy-drama. Jenny Blake (Blondell) is the beautiful owner of a riverboat casino, but she aspires to a life in high society. Jack Morgan (Wayne) is her business partner and influential political boss - the two are in love, but Jenny decides to leave him and the business so she could marry socialite Alan Alderson (Ray Middleton) for prestige and in return she forgives Alan's gambling debts and pays off the back taxes of his family's once-grand mansion and plantation. Her new in-laws are infuriated by this marriage of convenience, and do everything in their power to ruin Jenny in the eyes of society.

Retired pug Joe Anton (George Raft) had finally opened his own nightclub, and was itching to show that he had developed class... especially to gorgeous debutante Jerry Healy (Constance Cummings). He hires proper matron Mabel Jellyman (Alison Skipworth) for coaching in how to be a gentleman, but his old crowd-like brassy Maudie Triplett (Mae West, in her film debut)-won't make the transformation easy! Wynne Gibson, Louis Calhern co-star. 74 min. Standard; Soundtrack English; Subtitles English; audio commentary; theatrical trailers.

Having frittered away her inheritance, incorrigible socialite Jane Palmer (Irene Dunne) seeks professional help, and her therapist, Doctor Enright (Patric Knowles), opts to accompany her west as she seeks a handout from her grandmother. Granny tells Jane she can try her luck in the family's played-out gold mine, but will her putterings wind up sparking a stampede of prospectors? Fun farce co-stars Ralph Bellamy, Eugene Pallette. 78 min. Standard; Soundtrack English; Subtitles English; audio commentary.
