In the long and eventful history of the Dresden court music, the figure of Kapellmeister Johann Christoph Schmidt undoubtedly marks a critical juncture. However, it seems that Augustus the Strong recognized Schmidt's talent early on, as his rise was steady and culminated in 1697 when he officially succeeded Schutz - a wise decision by the ruler, who Schmidt well served with musical creations that catered to the favored French taste. The work group formed by Telemann's overture suites is regarded as exemplary and even today offers a wealth of discoveries - and the three works presented here in album recording premieres certainly answer this description. It is difficult to determine the chronological order of Telemann's extant overture suites because the composer incorporated very different influences into them, not only from French music since the invention of the form by Jean-Baptiste Lully but also from the InchLullistsInch active in Germany such as Johann Sigismund Kusser, Philipp Heinrich Erlebach, and Johann Fischer. And for Telemann's pronounced tendency to mix existing formal, stylistic, and generic traditions, the overture suite formed an absolutely ideal foil. Here we can find diverse characters, formal combinations, and stylistic interconnections in great supply. The great imagination and spirit at work here are also shown in the plentiful stores of surprising ideas that shine like flashes of brainstorm lightning in various passages.

This Ain't Chicago looks back on the club scene in England in the mid to late '80s, when DJs at places like Shoom, Spectrum, the Hacienda and countless warehouse parties were reinterpreting the sounds of acid house coming from Chicago. Years before he made a name for himself with Padded Cell or Bronx Dogs, Sen witnessed this scene as a clubber and a fledgling DJ, and he chronicles his experiences with the upcoming compilation. 'This album features many personal favorites and the tracks were particularly inspirational to me as a DJ and clubber at the time,' he says.
