About this product
2017 . Cutting her teeth as a sideman in Boston's roots music scene, Laura Cortese forged a unique path through a pool rich in talent (due to a large population of Berklee School of Music graduates like herself) including stints as an instrumentalist with Band of Horses, Pete Seeger, Rose Cousins, Jocie Adams (of the Low Anthem), and Uncle Earl. Her Compass Records debut, California Calling, is the next step in her career as a frontwoman and bandleader-she and her Dance Cards (cellist Valerie Thompson, fiddler Jenna Moynihan, and bassist Natalie Bohrn) break new ground with a bold and elegant album, based in the lyrical rituals of folk music but exploring new territories of rhythm and sonics. With the support of Sam Kassirer, album producer of folk-pop favorites like Lake Street Dive and Joy Kills Sorrow, they've created something that's simultaneously rowdy, delicate and cinematic

Acclaimed fiddler, singer, and songwriter Laura Cortese releases Lucky Water, her first album in six years, on October 9th. Nearly a decade after relocating to Belgium, Cortese channels the profound shifts of marriage, motherhood, and dual citizenship into a collection that moves fluidly between chamber folk, roots rock, and indie pop. Recorded at Betty's - the rural North Carolina studio opened by Sylvan Esso - and produced by LOLLIES, Lucky Water transforms uncertainty and displacement into an affirmation of the relationships and communities that sustain us. In support of the album, Cortese embarks on a North American tour in October.

Laura Cortese and the Dance Cards create a stunning, forward-looking sound that charts a path for innovation in folk music. -PopMatters Inch...vocally superb... amazing talent with the fiddleInch -Maverick InchLike many of the best InchfolkInch bands, this talented quartet is much more of an uncategorisable and dynamic forceInch -Americana UK Inch... their close and complex harmonies and imaginative arrangements signified the best of folk right now.Inch -The Bluegrass Situation Expanding on the boundaries of what an indie-folk band can be, Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards take their extensive string music background, add their knowledge of folk and roots music, and incorporate an edgy pop sensibility to create their latest album, BITTER BETTER. A stunning lesson in all the ways string instruments can be played- bowed, plucked, percussively - the album showcases Cortese and multi-instrumentalist producer Sam Kassirer (Lula Wiles, Lake Street Dive) striving to capture the most adventurous approach to each moment. The result is an album that incorporates dance-worthy foundational grooves, synth, and loops to push the boundaries of the genre. The band has been invited to support The Mountain Goats on their extended US tour, which kicks off in late April.
