Laure Stehlin writes InchA singular and timeless musical world, Orées is an initiation into fully conscious listening. My music is a link with all that vibrates, that throbs. It facilitates presence to oneself and enables an opening out beyond oneself. The edges (orées) are frontiers where the visible and the invisible meet, the audible and the unheard of, the perceptible and the mysterious, the real and the imaginary. Orées was conceived like a sound cabinet, in reference to the cabinets of curiosities which housed a multitude of rare objects representing the animal, vegetable and mineral worlds, in addition to human artefacts. For me the tone-color of the voice or instrument is significant. This is why my instrumentarium is rich each instrument, through it's sonority, establishes a connection with one or more of the five elements that are earth, fire, water, air and ether. My musical pieces lie in between composition and improvisation and are nurtured by an intimate link with Nature. My Musical Art consists of touching the listener through the subtle effects of the sounds. For each piece, I work from a finely chiseled intention that leads the vibration to a contact that is physical, psychic, emotional and spiritual with the person who receives it. The sound wave, rich with the flux created in this way, nurtures the being, inviting it to plunge into the unfathomable landscapes of it's inner world.Inch

The great hit at Venice's San Moise theatre in the autumn season of 1810 was Pietro Generali's Adelina. This 'melodramma sentimentale' was the latest work by an important contemporary of Rossini, who enjoyed a vogue in early nineteenth-century Italy. The plot concerns the trials of a girl who is seduced and abandoned by her lover, Erneville, has a child out of wedlock, and is rejected by her father who, thanks to the intervention of a kindly friend, then forgives her after she marries Erneville. Brimming with vivacious writing, Adelina reflects powerful cultural attitudes in vogue in early nineteenth-century Italy.

David Kechley's latest album of orchestra music is a lot easier to listen to than pronounce. It draws from far flung parts of the world, and historical origins, and brings them into a grand compelling vision. The album features two large scale orchestra works recorded with dazzling clarity by the Sudeten Filharmonie in a small Polish town, Walbrzych (most recently in the news for supposedly being the subterranean hiding place of the infamous Nazi gold train.) The first work, 'Karasuma A Fast Funk for Orchestra,' started life as a classroom exercise at the Donisha Women's College in Kyoto, Japan, here Kechley demonstrated how acoustic musical fragments could be combined in various ways by computer. The work was so successful it was expanded and premiered by the Boston Pops in 1993. The other major work on the album is a symphony exploring various aspects of dreams, 'Wakeful Visions/ Moonless Dreams.' Each of the four movements is associated with literary references; from the Old Testament, a haiku by Buson, the Witches' scene from Shakespeare's MacBeth, and musings on remembrance by Marcel Proust. David Kechley recently retired from teaching at Williams College, Massachussetts. Taken as a whole this is a record of an expansive imagination and an intercontinental achievement.
