Jacques Hotteterre, called le Romain, is one of the most illustrious figures in the history of the transverse flute. At the same time a distinguished performer, an enlightened teacher and a recognized composer, he brought to the Baroque flute full respectability through his Livres de pièces (Books of Pieces), L'Art de Prélude (The Art of the Prelude) and his Principes de la Flûte (principles of the Flute). There are various confusions relating to Jacques Hotteterre, to whom the invention of the three-section Baroque flute is of !en wrongly attributed, whereas he was only it's popularizer. The Rondeau Les Tourterelles, gracieusement et un peu lent (Rondeau The Turtle-Doves, gracefully and rather slow) is a piece in subdued shades. Hotteterre allows the feeling to open out. The rondeau structure is perfectly mastered and the use of portamento, slurs and harmonic delays gives the composition a languishing character that the title confirms. This piece ought to be played with unequal notes, making the dialogue still more tender. The Gigue, in the Italian style, as always with Hotteterre, brings equality between the two upper parts. Far from writing a second accompanying part, the composer has provided a second treble part of equal importance with the first. This ability demonstrates the composer's musical gifts to be developed in the final passacaglia. This last consists of 153 bars in two tonalities, B minor and B major, and is almost perfect in it's structure. Motifs of four and a half bars are always repeated twice, except in variations 5, 6 and 7. Variation 5 has nine bars, twice repeated; variation 6 has four and a half bars once, not repeated; variation 7 has sixteen bars, not repeated. It is in this kind of piece that the composer's imagination is given expression, since the repetitions can tire the listener if no new musical idea is occasionally introduced. In th

For her second album with Cypres, Laurence Mekhitarian has devised a programme combining the music of Robert Schumann with that of Gyorgy Kurtag, as it seemed obvious to her that their worlds share a profound emotional kinship. Certain works by Kurtag, such as the Trio Hommage a R. Sch. And Quasi una fantasia, bear direct witness to this. Alongside Schumann's Waldszenen, Laurence Mekhitarian has chosen to include three excerpts from Leos Janacek's cycle Sur un sentier recouvert and to play each of these pieces alternately with miniatures by Kurtag from his ten collections of Jatekok. The pianist has followed a free path here, guided by echoes, resonances, contrasts and sonic affinities. Kurtag has been part of her musical life for nearly forty years, both as a performer and a teacher. His high standards, his depth and his humanity have had a profound impact on her. In her view, he embodies a rare and essential way of being in the world through art. This programme has been constructed with curiosity and wonder, allowing the works to dialogue with each other. Kurtag's pieces - Fleurs, Objet trouve, Jeu avec l'infini - open up a sound space beyond the keyboard. They lead us to the Waldszenen, like a door to a world waiting to be explored. Each of Kurtag's miniatures is a tribute, a memory, a message. The journey ends with a transcription of a Largo by Johann Sebastian Bach, followed by a piece by Artur Avanesov (Modulatio, as a hidden track...).

This Temps d'Arménie is the musical result of close collaborations initiated by the pianist Laurence Mekhitarian with the three Belgian composers Jean-Pierre Deleuze, Jean-Luc Fafchamps and Claude Ledoux. The unpublished works on this disc are the result of a musical and cultural journey experienced by their authors during multiple trips to Armenia. Laurence Mekhitarian wished to put this musical present Time in resonance with the past Time of traditional music, represented by melodies harmonized by Komitas (transcribed for piano by the Armenian pianist Villy Sargsyan), and with a Monodie written by Jean-Luc Fafchamps for duduk, emblematic instrument of Armenian music. These new musical times are spaces of freedom and express a desire for continuity in the face of the turbulent history of this Armenian people.
