About this product

Although the composers of the French baroque were remarkably prolific, they left US relatively little chamber music. Luckily, the few works extant are as well-written those by Vivaldi or Bach and they provide listeners a new perspective on music of the period. Francois Couperin, the finest composer at the court of Louis XIV, wrote several masterworks of chamber music, including the elegant and beautiful collection of sonatas entitled Les Nations, performed here by the ensemble Les Ombres. Couperin greatly admired Italian baroque composers such as Corelli, and his sonatas demonstrate his lifelong commitment to uniting, in his music, the best of both French and Italian musical conventions.

Les Ombres Sartre Blanchard - Semiramis - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Sémiramis tortured by Zoroastre's spells, violence, incest, murder and magnificence this is one of the most astonishing tragédies-lyriques! It's composer Destouches led an extraordinary life a missionary in Siam, then a Musketeer in the Royal Army, he finally became a musician and trained with Campra. His first operatic work, Issé, triumphed in 1697 in the presence of Louis XIV. Twenty years later, his last tragédie-lyrique, Sémiramis (1718), is of great dramatic force, that of the fatal destiny of the Queen of Babylon who, fearing the prophecy of a son who would lead her to death, abandoned him at birth. But Arsane, the adopted son whom she adores whilst ignoring his birth origins, will fulfil the will of the gods by saving his beloved Amestris, driven mad by the magic of Zoroastre. From this powerful libretto, Destouches calls upon striking effects that make his final work a veritable torrent of passion. Margaux Blanchard and Sylvain Sartre bring this opera of impossible love to a state of incandescence.

Couperin / Juilliard Baroque - Les Nations - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Although François Couperin (1668-1733) is best known today as a composer of harpsichord music, he remained deeply involved in chamber music throughout his career. - Les Nations is a vast project in which the virtues of both the French and Italian styles are set next to each other. - Each of the four ordres celebrates a Catholic power of Europe - France, Spain, the Holy Roman Empire and the Savoy dynasty of Piedmont - and each is a combination of an Italianate trio sonata with it's free-form virtuosity and a large-scale and elaborate French dance suite. - Led by the Julliard School's Historical Performance Program artistic director and violinist Monica Huggett, the period instrument specialist Juilliard Baroque ensemble, featuring nine of the world's most respected and accomplished early music instrumentalists, is a faculty grouping committed to lively, passionate performances of 17th - 18th c. music.
