The Supermarine Spitfire Mk-II, powered by a 1,175 hp Rolls Royce Merlin XII V–12 engine with a constant speed three-bladed propeller, could reach 360 mph at 19,500 feet and had a service ceiling of 36,500 feet. Its elliptical, near-supersonic wing design allowed dives at over Mach 0.92, making it faster and more maneuverable than the German Messerschmitt Bf 109E.
