The first slot has 8GB of RAM but it is onboard (i.e. soldered to the motherboard) and the second slot has 8GB which can be exchanged for 16GB for a total of 24GB...^IFV

A: No. That is one way they were able to decrease the weight. I have not missed though, because I've been able to download what I need from the web.
