About this product

Guitarist, singer and songwriter Lightnin' Slim (real name Otis Hicks) was born in Louisiana in 1913 and was a pioneer and first prominent exponent of the InchSwamp BluesInch style, coming relatively late in life to recording in his early 40s to record his best-known work during the late 1950s and early '60s, before retreating from the business until being re-discovered and brought back to performing in the early 1970s. His music became a significant influence on British artists during the '60s blues boom. Swamp blues, focused in the clubs of Baton Rouge, is a laid-back but highly rhythmic blues style, influenced by Cajun music, and which the book InchMusic USA A Rough GuideInch states is characterised by Incheerie echo, shuffle beats, tremolo guitars, searing harmonica and sparse percussionInch. This great-value 46-track 2-CD set comprises all the titles which Lightnin' Slim recorded for the Feature, Ace and Excello labels during these years, including the only R&B chart hit of his career InchRooster BluesInch. He is accompanied on these recordings by a variety of other Louisiana musicians, most notably the harmonica player Lazy Lester. This collection offers an entertaining insight into the music of a highly individual artist as well as a distinctive strand of regional blues.

Guitar Slim - Complete Releases 1951-58 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Guitar Slim, who originally recorded under his given name of Eddie Jones, was born in 1926 and raised in the heartland of the blues in the Mississippi Delta, where he was a singer and dancer in his teens. He started playing in New Orleans after war service, becoming known for his wild stage act, and using distorted guitar sounds a decade before rock guitarists like Jimi Hendrix. This 30-track CD comprises all his A & B sides during the 1950s, recording for the Imperial, J-B, Specialty and Atco labels until his premature death in 1959. It includes his landmark million-selling R&B No. 1 hit from 1954 InchThe Things That I Used to DoInch, which was subsequently listed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's Inch500 Songs That Shaped Rock and RollInch. It's a comprehensive overview of his career, and showcases his distinctive and innovative style, which influenced the likes of Buddy Guy, Albert Collins and Frank Zappa, as well as Hendrix himself, who recorded a version of InchThe Things That I Used to DoInch - it was also later covered by Stevie Ray Vaughan

Cirque Du So What? - Stupid Cowboy Thing: Grandmother 1 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Cirque do So What, the sketch comedy super group made up of Devo Spice, the great Luke Ski, Shoebox of Worm Quartet, and Chris Mezzolesta of Power Salad, returns with their second album which is so packed full of comedy, insanity, and profanity, that it had to be broken up into two albums. Stupid Cowboy Thing, Volume 1 GRANDMOTHER! Features an hour of hilarious sketches, phony commercials, and bizarre music. The Guess The Context series continues unashamedly, and of course there are appearances by The Tile Guy. There's also a really inappropriate song that you will find yourself singing at all the wrong times because it will get stuck in your head and will surface and the most inopportune times. This album also heavily features Carrie Dahlby, Kim Crist, and Sara Trice, and also features a cameo appearance by the lads of Flat 29. Stupid Cowboy Thing, Volume 1 GRANDMOTHER! Is now available. Order now, and watch for Stupid Cowboy Thing, Volume 2 Additional Squid to be released in early 2012.

Elmore James - Complete Singles As & BS 1951-62 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Despite the fact that his career was curtailed in 1963 by a fatal heart attack when he was only 45, Elmore James was an extremely influential figure in the development of blues guitar, both but virtue of his highly distinctive sound, which he consciously developed by building his own combination of a modified hollow-bodied guitar and custom pick-ups, but also his hit with a version of Robert Johnson's InchDust My BroomInch, which has become one of the most ubiquitously performed and recorded tunes in blues. This 52-track 2-CD collection comprises the A and B sides of every single he released from his debut on the small Trumpet tag with the aforementioned classic in 1951 through to a few months before his death, during which time he recorded for the Meteor, Flair, Modern, Chief, Fire and Chess labels. A host of high profile guitarists have readily cited Elmore James as an influence and performed his material over the years, despite his relatively modest body of work, including Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan and George Thorogood. This collection is an ideal introduction to his work.
