Lindpaintner / Brunensis - Il Vespro Siciliano - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

In seventeenth-century church music, features of the Renaissance tradition (polyphony, modality) coexisted with elements of Baroque innovation (harmony, tonality) and merged into the concertato style. The Salmi Concertati op. II by Father Francesco Antonio Urio included in this Vespers dedicated to the Virgin, follow this transformation with full rights. The Vesprus, here in it's first modern performance ever, shows vocal pieces for three voices of rare melodic quality where the imitative style, the counterpoint, the modal harmony, the numerous tempo changes, the various melismata and a number of diminutions reveal remarkable compositional ability. Album Tracks 1. Sinfonia in Re Maggiore (D Major) 2. Salmi Concertati, Op. 2~Domine ad Adiuvandum (Psalm No. 70) 3. Salmi Concertati, Op. 2~Dixit Dominus (Psalm No. 109) 4. A very special recording and interpretation of the famous Vespers of the Virgin Mary; InchVespro della Beata VergineInch Roberto Zarpellon leads the vocal ensemble InchVenice Monteverdi AcademyInch; his ensemble InchLorenzo da PonteInch and the chorale schola InchReale Corte Armonica Caterina CornaroInch - all of them genuine Italians - in a recording that took place in the church where Monteverdi worked for three decades as Kapellmeister; namely the famous Basilica of San Marco in Venice. As far as music is concerned; this church with it's magnificent mosaics and domes as well as it's very transparent room acoustics was a place of pilgrimage for musicians and composers from near and far during the Renaissance and Baroque periods; with such illustrious names as Adrian Willaert; the organists Giovanni and Andrea Gabrieli and Monteverdi as maestro di capella.
