About this product

Corruption? Betrayal? Persecution? Tyranny? These subjects resonate with the current events of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. They also provide the subject matter of many seventeenth-century musical works. Kate Lindsey has chosen to devote this second Baroque recital with the English ensemble Arcangelo directed by Jonathan Cohen (following Arianna in 2020, ALPHA576) to the figure of Nero. Scarlatti, Handel and Monteverdi wrote works focusing on this tragic protagonist and his entourage, including his mother Agrippina and his wives (Poppaea and Octavia). Interpreted with incredible intensity by the American mezzo-soprano, the programme features world premiere recordings of two cantatas Alessandro Scarlatti's La morte di Nerone (c.1690) and Bartolomeo Monari's La Poppea (1685). Tenor Andrew Staples and soprano Nardus Williams join Kate Lindsey for duets from L'incoronazione di Poppea, including the sensual 'Pur ti miro'.

Vistoli Pantieri Sezione Aurea - Amor Tiranno - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Following the success of 'Arias for Nicolino', a musical portrait of the celebrated castrato of Handel's era (A427), Carlo Vistoli turns his attention to Venetian opera of the seventeenth century. The Italian countertenor - 'a voice [...] intrinsically beautiful, strong and powerful' (Opera Magazine) - has been delving into this repertory since the beginning of his international career with specialists such as Leonardo Garcia Alarcon, William Christie and John Eliot Gardiner. In this anthology accompanied by the ensemble Sezione Aurea, the focus is on operatic scenes and chamber music by the leading composers of the time, such as Francesco Cavalli and Claudio Monteverdi, whose famous aria 'Sì dolce e 'l tormento' exemplifies the linking thread of the arias in this recording disappointed lovers. They express their disillusion not only through lamenti, but also in a lighter, more humorous fashion that can include dance forms, as in the chaconne 'Amanti, io vi so dire' by Benedetto Ferrari, a lesser-known but historically important composer who, like Filiberto Laurenzi and Francesco Sacrati, contributed to the development of the dramma per musica as a genre.

Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The follow-up to 2007's critically acclaimed and Domino debut RISE ABOVE. Their fifth is a big rock album by design. It's idiosyncratic and sincere take on popular music is reminiscent of David Byrne with whom Dirty Projectors collaborated for the 2009 compilation DARK WAS THE NIGHT. In many ways, group leader David Longstreth could be seen as this generation's answer to Byrne, a distinctive torchbearer of labyrinthine song arrangements that go down easy.
