A: If you go from the modem directly into a wireless router, then any hard wire connection off the router can go into as many switches as you want. I have my cable modem feeding into my Linksys wireless router, then out of my router into my 12 port switch, and then from my 12 port switch I have 2 other 8 port switches in other parts of the house. Then problem for most people is they try and come right off the modem right into a switch and you will get blocked every time. If you go into the router 1st, the ISPs can't see past the router.
A: If that was the only use for this then yes, but you could use this to just connect 5 computers together for LAN sharing
A: This product has LED indicators on the front that indicate link is active and and the LED's will either light orange or blue to show the internet speed that port is processing at.
A: Yes, exactly what this is for. Good luck to her..
A: This will work from a modem connection for additional ports. It DOES NOT issue DHCP, so you would have to use a computer to issue IP addresses to additional devices (setup as DHCP server), or set each static and tell Windows to share your internet connection to network. Router would be better if you are not technically savvy, or if you want WiFi
Q: Do I need to have wifi for this or will it give me wifi
A: This will not give you WiFi, it is a switch that distributes your internet signal to various devices via a wired connection. You will need an ISP, or Internet Service Provider, to supply you with an internet connection. From there, if they do not supply a router, (and most will supply it although you may have to pay a rental fee each month), you will need a WiFi router that can then give you WiFi.
Q: Will a linksys switch work with a netgear router? I think it would but I thought I would ask.
A: Yes it will
A: No, this does not supply PoE. You can buy a PoE injecter to install inline so the device you need to power will work.
