Brand new 1/72 scale diecast airplane model of the Lockheed Alpha Jet Aircraft "VTX-TS Competition" United States Navy "Military" Series die cast model by Herpa, featuring a detailed exterior, true-to-scale accuracy, includes landing gear, and comes with a display stand. The model is made of diecast metal with some plastic parts for durability and a heavy, realistic feel, measures approximately 6.5 inches in length with a 5-inch wingspan, does not have any openings, and comes in the manufacturer’s original unopened packaging. In 1978, the United States Navy initiated the VTX-TS advanced trainer program to replace the T-2 Buckeye and TA-4 Skyhawk trainers, and Dassault and Dornier collaborated with Lockheed to offer a "navalized" version of the Alpha Jet with minor modifications, including US-sourced avionics and strengthened landing gear for carrier operations. In September 1980, the Alpha Jet A58 was ferried to the United States and evaluated by over 70 Navy and Air Force instructor pilots on multiple sorties. Although praised for its flight characteristics, low fuel consumption, and ease of maintenance, it ultimately lost the contract to the single-engine T-45 Goshawk produced under license by McDonnell Douglas. Despite not being selected, the Alpha Jet demonstrated its capabilities, and the VTX-TS competition remains a notable chapter in the 50-year history of the Franco-German trainer and light attack aircraft.
