Toronto's Mad Iris has been playing live in the local underground scene since 2023, blending noise rock, punk, and shoegaze into a sound that honors influences like Sonic Youth, Pixies, and the Breeders. Their self-titled debut album covers desire, obsession, longing, and grief, taking place in basements, night buses, and gas stations, with gum stuck to desks and drinks spilled on sticky floors. Throughout the record, distorted vocals crash and ascend in unison with thrashing drums, plump basslines, and staticky guitar overdrive, lurching between restraint and eruption.A Mad Iris song teeters on disaster, shifting from gritty feedback to intentional sloppy haze, like the sound of a tape machine overheating. Strong, sparkling production is complemented by a wall of noisy visuals videos that emulate a worn VHS tape, scrapbook show flyers, and alleyway photoshoots. InchOur visuals are an integral part of the band's style,Inch says bassist Ela Hinatsu, who shares lead vocals with guitarist Kaiya Rosie, often on the same song. Dina Summer is the collaborative project formed from electro-punk band Frittenbude member, Kalipo, dark-disco DJ and producer duo, Local Suicide, and frontwoman Dina. Recognized as one of the key dark electronic albums of the year, Girls Gang blends dark disco, EBM, new wave, and synth-pop with powerful vocals and strong themes of empowerment, alienation, and nostalgia. The sophomore longplayer is more song-oriented than the debut album, often featuring real bass and guitar, and showcasing a more vocal-driven performance from Dina that incorporates more singing alongside her trademark spoken words. Yet, Girl Gang retains the same catchy melodies Dina Summer is known for, offering both indie pop hymns and a few undeniable club anthems.
