About this product

During the seventeenth century the historia developed in Protestant church music as a genre telling the Easter, Passion, and Christmas stories in the words of Luther's Bible. The Dresden chapel master Heinrich Schütz, who was renowned far and wide already during his lifetime, drew on this form as early as 1623. And when he had his Weihnachtsthistorie published in 1664, it replaced the older historia in the setting by Rogier Michael, Schütz's predecessor as chapel master, though Schütz retained most of Michael's text. As manifold tractates and introductions in printed music of the seventeenth century often indicate, the works to be performed are to be presented in keeping with the circumstances and resources available in the performance location. Accordingly, Schütz also let it be known in his introduction to the Weihnachtshistorie that he Inchleft it open to set these ten concertos in a manner pleasing to them and for the corpus musicum available to them, either entirely anew by themselves in a different way or to have them composed by others.Inch This idea inspired the members of the Polyharmonique ensemble to produce an alternative version of the Weihnachtshistorie that would be practicable for their particular ensemble. The resultant HISTORIA NATIVITATIS strictly follows the formal intention of InchSagittarius SchützInch and was set for a Inchcorpus musicumInch of six voice parts, two violins, curtal, and a colorful basso continuo.

Other highlights include the instrumentals 'Play Lady Play, Magic Carpet Ride', and the simmering title track, which all highlight the band's tasteful alchemy. Elixir has sold over 500,000 copies in the United States and was certified gold by the RIAA.The 30th anniversary edition of Elixir is newly remastered from the original tapes, it will be released on 180g One Step Pressing Double Vinyl LP.

David Lang - Mystery Sonatas - VINYL LP

Back in April 2014 at Carnegie's Zankel Hall, Augustin Hadelich's performance of David Lang's 'mystery sonatas' was praised by the New York Times as a riveting display of Inchmagisterial poise and serene control.Inch That same magic penetrates this starkly beautiful recording of the work, played by Hadelich on the exquisite 1723 Inchex-KiesewetterInch Stradivari, on loan to him by it's current owners since 2011. Lang based his 'mystery sonatas' on the famous pieces by Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber, but with a modern twist. InchI decided to make my own virtuosic pieces about my most intimate, most spiritual thoughts,Inch he explains, Inch[but] mine are not about Jesus, and the violin is not retuned between movements. I did keep one of Biber's distinctions. He divides Jesus's life into three phases-the joyous, the sorrowful, and the glorious. The central pieces of my mystery sonatas are called 'joy, sorrow,' and 'glory,' but these are all quiet, internal, reflective states of being.Inch
