Maik Krahl makes fear a subject of discussion. Fear of making decisions or doing something that you might regret later. The fear of making an irreparable error, perhaps ruining your future as a result, being rejected or giving offense. Not a few people are inclined to postpone answers to urgent questions in the hope that everything will somehow solve itself. But only waiting increases the problem. Psychology calls this phenomena Inchdecidophobia.Inch InchEspecially as a jazz musician you are forced continually to make decisions. Everything that you do has a direct influence on the band and the character of the piece. You cannot simply trust any mechanisms. It is a question of with which musicians I record and which pieces are included on the album,Inch Krahl explained. For him, it is less a question of fear of possibly negative consequences, the trumpeter assured. InchI would instead call it decision uncertainty.Inch This is the current case for Krahl. After all, it is his first album under his own name which is being released in the highly respected Jazz thing Next Generation series. But the musician has no reason to worry. The seven tracks on this are brimming with bold inspiration, amazing solutions, compositional finesse, and stupendous virtuosity. Krahl might brood about what is wrong or right, what makes sense and what doesn't. However, precisely because he left nothing to chance, his debut album sounds above all courageous and daring.

This is a re- of the Jazzhaus/SWR music bestseller 101703. Upon nearing the age of seventy, Duke Ellington was looked upon as the great historical figure of African American music, honored with academic degrees and appearing on the front pages of renowned magazines. Still, he had to and wanted to perform as much as he could and therefore toured the world with his orchestra, from Japan to North Africa to South America and Eastern Europe. During his travels, he was able to stop off in Stuttgart in March 1967 to present a colorful mixed programme made up of a few tried-and-true pieces and many lesser-known compositions. By Ellington's standards, it was a modern concert, exuberant in mood and at times mischievous in arrangements, which allowed some shrill coloring. And it also showed that even an ultimately traditional jazz orchestra in the rocky sixties could develop enough charisma to enthrall an audience like that in the Liederhalle. The revolutions were now being made by others, but Duke Ellington remained the brilliant master of the grand musical gesture.

AOID starts with disarming sounds swarming and settling into a prominent, mellifluous vocal track and heartbreakingly tender strumming. Their new album AOID reminds us of classics like Mirah, Okkervil River, Rilo Kiley or Wye Oak meeting somewhere with more contemporary acts like Waxahatchee or even Hop Along at their quieter moments.
