About this product

The most prominent member of a distinguished Dutch line of musicians in the 17th century, Anthoni van Noordt (1619-1675) was organist of the Nieuwezijds chapel in Amsterdam between 1636 and 1664, when he took up the more prestigious post the Nieuwe Kerk until his retirement in 1673, dying two years later. The tablature book of 1659 is the only extant collection dedicated to his work, comprising ten sets of variations on Psalm melodies from the Genevan Psalter, and six fantasias. Psalm 24 stands out for it's vibrant originality as a masterpiece of improvisation, but all the pieces in the collection demonstrate what a formidable organist Van Noordt must have been, as well as requiring the same flair and invention from a modern performer. Choice of instrument in this repertoire is crucial, and for the latest volume in his adventurous journey through the organ music of northern and central Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, Manuel Tomadin has selected a superbly preserved original example dating from 1637 in the Jakobikirche of Lübeck. The booklet gives a full specification of the organ as well as the stop list chosen by Tomadin for each individual track, as well as a substantial essay by the organist which discusses the life and music of Van Noordt. Tomadin's highly colored, rhythmically flexible performances pay respect to the essentially improvisational nature of Van Noordt's language without undervaluing the influence of Sweelinck, the dominant voice in northern-European organ music of the time, on his style. Album Tracks 1. Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621) 2. Erbarm Dich Mein, O Herre Gott (6 Variations) 3. Anthoni Van Noordt (C.1619-1675) 4. Psalm 116 5. Fantasia 2 a 4 in D minor 6. Psalm 2 7. Psalm 22 8. Fantasia 3 a 4 in E minor 9. Psalm 38 10. Fantasia 4 a 4 in E minor 11. Psalm 24 12. Psalm 6 13. Fantasia 5 a 4 in C 14. P

Manuel Tomadin - Choral & Organ Music - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

In his own lifetime (1839-1901), Joseph Rheinberger was more sought after as a professor of organ and composition than he was recognized as a great composer. His roll call of students at the conservatoire in Munich was long and impressive, including Humperdinck, Wolf-Ferrari and Furtwängler. However, Rheinberger produced a significant catalogue of sacred music in particular, concentrated on choir and organ. Sometimes unfavourably compared to Brahms, he is more usefully regarded as a south-German Fauré - for the gentle contours of his melodies and the softly rounded quality of his choral writing. The principal work on this new album is the Mass for four-part men's chorus which he composed in 1898, and which has become a staple of the male chorus repertoire around the world. By no means as staid or sober as it's scoring might suggest, the Mass is a work of resonant beauty and sweetness, a concise and elegant demonstration of Rheinberger's melodic gifts and his embodiment of Catholic values in the secular musical culture of late 19th-century Germany. This newly recorded album makes an ideal introduction to the world of Rheinberger through it's diversity. The Mass is complemented by a radiant partsong, Abendfriede, and a setting of the Ave Maria all the more affecting for it's devotional simplicity, close in spirit to the early motets of Bruckner. Finally, Manuel Tomadin plays the grandest and best-known of the 20 organ sonatas composed by Rheinberger throughout his career. Cast in three movements, No. 19 opens with an imposing Allegro, while the intimate central Provenzalische finds Rheinberger at his most beguiling as he taps into the folkloristic culture of German Catholicism. Prefaced by a broad introduction, the chromatic counterpoint of the finale approaches Reger for hard-won transcendence, played here on the organ of the Church of Maria Ausiliatrice in the Sloveni

Manuel Tomadin - Complete Organ Music - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Among the most popular of pianistic genres now, boasting virtuoso showpieces from Bach to Prokofiev, the keyboard toccata first appeared in print in 1591, within this collection of work by Sperindio Bertoldo. Sadly the collection only appeared posthumously, for Bertoldo died around 1570, at the age of 40 or so, at the height of an illustrious if eventful career. He had become organist of Padua Cathedral in his early 20s, but in 1567 he was suspended for insubordination. Having evidently shown appropriate contrition, he was reinstated, and remained in post until his death, having at that stage published only books of madrigals. Yet his organ works are equally worthy of revival, anticipating the florid brilliance and spatial effects of the Venetian masters such as the Gabrielis. Another volume published in 1591 was dedicated to Canzoni francese instrumental versions of French songs by Crecquillon, Janequin and Clemens non Papa and these are elaborately decorated with imitation and ornamentation like a side-chapel to a Rococo church. Scarcely better known is the scant output of Cesare Borgo, who was born and died in Milan and worked there as an organist-friar, rising to become organist for the then-newly built instrument at Milan Cathedral. Published in Venice in 1599, this collection of canzone is also inflected with fashionable French-style harmonies though given the titles of vernacular Italian songs whose origins are now mostly lost. The attraction of Borgo's canzone lies in their often gentle, reflective explorations of the melodic material within a sturdy ABA structure. They are played on this new recording on the organ installed by Vincenzo Colombi in 1523 at the Chiesa del Santissimo Corpo di Cristo in Valvasone in the province of Pordenone. Album Tracks 1. Tocata Seconda Di Sperindio Bertoldo 2. Canzon Frances 3. Hor Vienza Vien 4. Ricercar Del Sest
