Fred Frith describes the Swiss pianist Katharina Weber as a Inchpiano iconInch. The classically trained pianist and composer moves in the large world of today's music, where borders no longer exist and new music and jazz improvisation merge. In Márta's Garden is her second solo album. The musical framework is formed by two piano pieces by György Kurtág dedicated to Márta Kurtág and at the centre is his composition Inch... eine Wanderung mit Robert Walser... Inch. The exchange with the Kurtágs, which has now lasted three decades, has left intensive traces in Katharina Weber's work - as a performer, as an improviser and as a composer. Like Kurtág, Weber creates her own sound cosmos. Inspired by intimate listening in meditative contemplation, not shying away from tonality, but emphasising colour, tonal tensions and overtones - at the same time an invitation and space for deeper listening, pondering, spinning forth,Inch writes Nina Polaschegg in the liner notes.

CD reissue. With their debut album Industrial Silence the Norwegian Madrugada have made a melancholic masterpiece with the floating vocals of Sivert Høyem accompanied by the guitar-plinking and mouth organ playing of the late Robert Buras. Madrugada creates a wonderful environment, and they do that with nothing more than conventional instruments, a bit piano and a slice of pedal-steel guitar. Sometimes they sound like Leonard Cohen or 16 Horsepower, sometimes like Nick Cave and they sound just as spheric and warm as other Scandinavian acts like Sigur Ros or Bjork. Listen to 'Shine', 'This Old House', 'Electric' and 'Quite Emotional' and get impressed by the masters of melancholy.
