About this product
Marisa Anderson's music transcends borders. The topography of her work interrogates the intersections of artistry and expression with form and tradition. Anderson crafts pieces bursting with equal parts reverence and curiosity, contouring familiar shapes into work that is wholly her own. Anderson has spent decades mining the veins of the complicated, interconnected American folk traditions she was steeped in from a young age, stretching beyond those traditions and incorporating the vocabulary and techniques of vernacular folk music from around the world into her work. Eschewing replication or revival, Anderson's music lives in conversation with tradition. InchMy approach to tradition is with the hands that I have and the history that I have,Inch notes Anderson. InchIn that way it's a collaboration-you don't go into collaboration trying to play like the other person, you go in trying to find out how to play together.InchThe Anthology of UnAmerican Folk Music is drawn from nearly one thousand songs culled from the private record collection of the late Harry Smith. For this record, Anderson works on music from places that the United States has been in conflict with since 1970 Southeast Asia, the USSR and the Arabic and Islamic regions of the world. In Volume 1 Anderson presents her own deeply personal iterations of nine songs from the Anthology. Composed, transcribed and arranged through a process of trial and error, deep listening and research, Anderson charts a musical course across the globe. Each piece on the album stands as a dialogue between Anderson and the original source recordings, refracted through the prism of her unique musical lens. Anderson's contribution to this dialogue ultimately invites asks InchWho are the people we've been told in our lifetimes are Inchunamerican?Inch What have we lost or been denied access to in the fallout from that tag?Inch

Elie Moyal, better known under the pseudonym Lili Labassi, is both a musician and an Algerian performer of songs from the Andalusian music repertoire and her own compositions.

On her new album Alva, singer, musician, activist and cultural icon Mari Boine offers glimpses into a childhood which she abandoned when she chose to leave behind a strict religious upbringing in order to pursue a life of activism. The new studio record reflects on finding the balance the between her, the at times lonely, mission to share the culture and histories of the Sámi people through music to people across the world, and her personal journey and relationships. The poignancy of the record reaches an emotional high on the mournful InchMu eadniInch (Mother of Mine), wherein Mari laments her own relationship with her mother. She is also found reflective on InchOainnestanInch (Glimpses), when looking at the relationship she has with her son.Alva reflects the InchwillpowerInch of it's name, and takes the listener on a musical journey of exhilarating momentum, spurred along by a full band. There's an emancipated energy that is also reflected in the music, soaring to new heights over vast imagined landscapes of the tundra of Northern Norway.
