About this product
In August 2019, I had the privilege of spending two afternoons in Vienna, the music capital of Europe, recording. I traveled to Vienna with my friend and producer, Jim Linahon, to spend two days recording in the Bösendorfer piano showroom, courtesy of Ferdinand Bräu. Vienna has been my favorite European city for a long time. And I have been a fan of Bösendorfer pianos since studying at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, Germany, where I fell in love with the sound of this amazing instrument. For the past 20 years, I have visited Vienna many times, and have played in various ensembles around this beautiful capital of Austria. Vienna has always had a distinct impact on me. The city's people, their humor, elegance, and joy, are like few other places I've been. While recording, I enjoyed exploring the sound of the piano, especially in the upper register. I also chose to improvise in a minimal way to let the instrument guide me on a musical stroll. I found my time in Vienna relaxing, inspiring, and deeply spiritual. I hope you, the listener, will enjoy the music as much as I enjoyed playing it. (Markus Burger)

![Ruiz-Pipo / Madrid Arcana String Quartet - Works with Guitar 1 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]](https://pisces.bbystatic.com/image2/BestBuy_US/images/products/b918d04d-9927-42cb-8c12-5942d67ce786.jpg;maxHeight=422;maxWidth=264?format=webp)
Antonio Ruiz-Pipo was one of the bravest and most progressive of the Spanish composers to escape the Franco dictatorship. His Andalusian background, Catalan training, residence in Paris and an enduring admiration of his 'saint' Manuel de Falla have all shaped his oeuvre. These solo and chamber works offer an overview of his career, from the poignant Estancias to the Mediterranean-influenced Trio en miniaturas which also represents Ruiz-Pipo's fascination with the music of antiquity. Infused with elements of French lyricism and sultry Spanish moods, Ruiz-Pipo's complex but humane musical idiom is richly deserving of discovery. Internationally acclaimed guitarist Wolfgang Weigel was born in 1954 in Saarbrucken. He studied at the music academies of Saarbrucken and Lubeck between 1970 and 1975, and later he became close friends with guitarist Karl Scheit in Vienna who became his artistic mentor. Weigel began to develop his international career as a performer and teacher in the 1980s and began to concentrate on contemporary music, focusing mainly on the repertoire of post-Franco Spain and South America.

The first album from the Choir of St John's with their new music director - Christopher Gray. Leaning into the college's well-established tradition of championing new music, at the heart of the programme are two triptychs James MacMillan's Cantos Sagrados, composed 35 years ago, and Joanna Marsh's Echoes in Time, commissioned by the College in recent months. There is also a new choral work by Helena Paish and a new organ work by Martin Baker alongside existing works by Roxanna Panufnik and Dobrinka Tabakova. The commissioned works were conceived with the distinctive environment of St Johns' Victorian chapel (designed by George Gilbert Scott and consecrated in May 1869), it's organ and it's fine, world-famous choir which has done service since it's post-Restoration establishment in the 1670s.

In another industry defying move, The Grateful Dead followed up their first Gold Record, the 1971 liveshowcase SKULL ROSES, with another live album, one that to most fans and critics surpassed even the excellence of the previous offering. From April 7 to May 26, 1972, the Dead performed and recorded 21 live concerts, plus a set in a television studio, with every night being an exceptional display of the magic that was uniquely the live Grateful Dead. These concerts and this tour, 50 years later, are still considered one of the highest of high points in The Grateful Dead's performing career. In an era whena double album was rare enough, the Dead outdid even their own lofty standards by producing a 3 LP masterpiece that to this day is considered one of the finest live albums ever produced. Remastered from the original analog tapes, the album has never sounded better.
