About this product

Joseph Marx was one of the leading figures of Austrian musical culture during his lifetime, but his music was out of step with 20th-century Modernism and most of his music disappeared from concert programmes after his death. The Natur-Trilogie is a richly impressionistic work that brims with lyrical passion, portraying the moods of Marx's untouched native landscapes while displaying his magical feel for harmony and orchestration. This recording's original was the first time the Natur-Trilogie had been heard in it's complete and original form, and was considered 'a major discovery' by MusicWeb International. This recording was first released in 2003 on the ASV tag, and is the first in a four-volume set of Joseph Marx's orchestral works to be re-released on Naxos. Of the original , MusicWeb International wrote InchThis is unambiguously the work of a nature ecstatic. If you already count Bax's nature canvasses among your favorite works, then you will be losing out if you do not get this excellent .Inch

A true discovery for lovers of classic Lieder, this new opens up the hitherto scarcely noticed repertoire of the Austrian composer Johann Vesque von Puttlingen, songs that are full of musical irony and the wonderful idiom of the 19th century. The soprano Caroline Jahns and pianist Hedayet Jonas Djeddikar have intensively worked on these gems by Vesque and derived much pleasure from fathoming out the humor of this music for voice and piano. Both artists are united by a passion for the charm and delights hidden in the familiar circles of the Romantic art song. Unfortunately, developments in society toward the end of the 19th century heralded the decline of the salons and, with them, the audiences that relished Johann Vesque von Puttlingen's satirical songs. So it is now our job to rediscover and appreciate the value of these rare works. The songs on this album present a composer who stands out from the multitude of song composers as one of the all-time greats.

Joseph Marx was described by Wilhelm Furtwangler as one of the leading figures in Austria's music scene, and while his music disappeared completely from concert programmes after his death he 'shaped an era' and left a profound impression on several generations of composers. Marx made no secret of his admiration for the Classical giants of music, and the late period works in this programme pay homage to Haydn and others while retaining Romantic sensibilities a blend of old and new that creates something remarkably timeless. Founded in 1919, the Bochum Symphony Orchestra has developed into one of the leading orchestras in western Germany. Under several general music directors and with avant-garde programmes, it has developed a wide reputation as an innovative orchestra. In 1994, the Israeli-American conductor Steven Sloane became general music director. Since then he has succeeded in raising the local, regional, and international profile of the Orchestra.
