The music of Melati Esp aka Melati Malay is a euphoric fusion of megacity rhythm and rainforest escape, club breaks and weightless pop, mapping new dreams from the sound of futures passed hipernatural. Drawing on the music era of her teenage years growing up in Jakarta - Javanese radio Dangdut, gamelan cassettes, Moving Shadow-era liquid jungle, Japanese chill-out, etc. - as well as her recent work in progressive percussion trio Asa Tone, Malay's solo debut is boldly borderless, bridging worlds and wavelengths into a richly imagined hybrid synthetic utopia. Hipernatural is momentous linguistically, too, as Malay's first foray into singing in Bahasa, the Indonesian language of her youth. Co-produced with long-time collaborator Kaazi, the album's 12 tracks are cohesive but eclectic, threading through temple bass music, cyber siren techno, Stereolab drum n bass, new age downtempo, and dial-up rave reveries, flecked with tactile fragments of offworld dialogue, computer hum, bubbling water, and beyond.1. Maria Usbeck's latest album Naturaleza is a bold new chapter for the always shape-shifting Ecuadorian singer-songwriter, diving deep into her singular realm of idiosyncratic pop music while retaining the observational, inquisitorial perspective that's marked her work thus far. Usbeck's third album for the Cascine tag follows the striking debut Amparo from 2016 (which featured co-production credits from Caroline Polachek) and 2019's expansive, exploratory Envejeciendo, which found Usbeck stretching her legs into the warm glow of 1980s electronic music and the spacious grooves of city pop. Since that album, she's also released the one-off single InchHollow,Inch which draped her entrancing vocals in a futuristic sheen amidst starry-eyed synths and the frissons of dialup technology. As Selofan's fifth studio album, Vitrioli, from 2018, is a testament to the tragedy of life. The Greek duo, Joanna Pavlidou and Dimitris Pavlidis, who recorded the album in the Fabrika Records home studio, continue on in their poetic, but heartbreaking, music set to a dance beat. Between languages (Greek, English, German, and Spanish), Selofan feels on the brink of mania with Vitroli. However, the madness is controlled, the songs are restrained hysterics that culminate into the alchemic perfection of the band's specific moody sound. From synthpop to synthpunk elements, the twelve-track LP leads listeners through dark corridors and into haunted, empty beds. There is a resignation to a doomed destiny with Vitroli-a trait that connects all Selofan releases-as a bitter pain and loneliness that cannot, or will not, subside. The album begins with InchGive Me a ReasonInch whose lyrics feel universal in this day and age Give me a reason, to get out of bed / I could just watch the ceiling instead. It's heartbreak is profound as bells and voice pads echo under Joanna's voice.
