Micah Thomas - Forest - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Micah Thomas' fifth album Lucid - featuring alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins, trombonist Kalia Vandever, bassist Thomas Morgan, and drummer Lesley Mok - is, in large part, a pursuit of the feeling of balance. The phrases in his playing and writing here are dynamic in motion yet concise - not too long in any direction, just hanging in space perfectly. This album is also an exploration of the feeling of ecosystem and habitat - the idea that things are happening that seem independent and maybe even random, but that also give life to the things that are happening around them and form a unified picture despite the complete autonomy of all the parts. Everyone in this band has an acute awareness of where they are and where everyone else is, and the agility to go wherever they need to go when they need to. The seeming surface independence of the band belies a tight interconnectivity. Album Tracks 1. O 2. Door 3. Frontier 4. Box Heart 5. Holiday 6. Interface 7. Logic 8. Night 9. Spacetime 10. Final

Mountains is an ambitious project from celebrated jazz pianist and composer Micah Thomas. His first large ensemble work, it offers an expansive and emotionally rich listening experience that explores the depths of musical storytelling. This exploratory project features Thomas alongside some of the most inventive luminaries in modern jazz, including trumpeter Adam O'Farrill, alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins, tenor saxophonist Nicole Glover, trombonist Caleb Smith, bassist Kanoa Mendenhall and drummer Kweku Sumbry. Drawing inspiration from his lifelong love of acoustic large ensemble music, Thomas reflects on the profound impact that formative musical experiences have had on his artistic development. Mountains is a testament to his journey through various musical influences, from Itzhak Perlman's orchestral performances to the emotive power of Charles Mingus' The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, and the bold narratives of Mahler, Stravinsky, and Prokofiev.
