Michael Jaeger Kerouac - Dance Around in Your Bones - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Kerouac Michael Jaeger - Outdoors [COMPACT DISCS] date 05/25/2010

Still in his early 20s, singer-composer Michael Mayo has developed his own rich, neo-soul sound that adroitly showcases his clear tenor, which glides over luxuriant clouds of his multi-tracked vocals. On the mostly wordless InchStolen MomentsInch (not to be confused with the Oliver Nelson tune), Mayo layers more than 250 of his own voice parts to stir up five-minute cocktail that combines elements of jazz vocal groups, contemporary psychedelic soul, the heavenly harmonies of the Beach Boys and even a dash of doo-wop.

The current work, JELLY ROLL PLAYS MORTON, explores one of the legendary figures of the origins of Jazz with splendid sensitivity. With her Jelly Roll Quintet, Helga Plankensteiner tackles Morton's splendid legacy with an attitude that on a first listen appears joyful, colorful, rich in moods and dynamics, with a few sprinklings of funk amid the rhythms of early 20th-century New Orleans.
