Michael Mayo - Fly - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Schnuckenack Reinhardt - Ungarische Romanze [COMPACT DISCS] date 01/01/2012

Still in his early 20s, singer-composer Michael Mayo has developed his own rich, neo-soul sound that adroitly showcases his clear tenor, which glides over luxuriant clouds of his multi-tracked vocals. On the mostly wordless InchStolen MomentsInch (not to be confused with the Oliver Nelson tune), Mayo layers more than 250 of his own voice parts to stir up five-minute cocktail that combines elements of jazz vocal groups, contemporary psychedelic soul, the heavenly harmonies of the Beach Boys and even a dash of doo-wop.

I'm trying to document emotions, more than specific events and memories. I mean... that's what my music is at the end of the day - I'm just documenting. This is Lucy Liyou, the Philadelphia-based experimental musician behind cinematic sister LPs Welfare and Practice. Working in their Korean-American lineage and pulling from childhood memories, Liyou takes inspiration from Pansori (Korean Folk Opera), a style of Korean musical storytelling; and Korean drama soundtracks. Collaging text-to-speech (TTS) with their own voice, personal field recordings, audio samples from memes, Tumblr, and YouTube videos, synthesizers, and rich acoustic piano, Liyou creates their own distinct narrative.1) I'm Going to Therapy2) Unnie3) Who You Feed4) Some Form of Kindness5) You are every memory6) Uncle7) At the dinner table8) Easiest9) How to build an automaton10) Patron11) Hail mary12) September 5
