About this product

Felix Mendelssohn composed his three String Quartets op. 44 dedicated to Sweden's crown prince and later king Oscar I during the years from 1837 to 1838. In 1840 Mendelssohn, who was regarded as an absolute perfectionist, revised these InchTrois Grands Quatuors,Inch which he judged to be »some hundred times better« than all of his previous works. Vol. 3 presents the first two quartets from op. 44. The first, the last of the series to be composed, belongs to the genre of the Inchquatuor brilliantInch - a type in which it is the first violin that shines. Already the introductory InchAllegro vivaceInch is like a concerto movement by reason of the fact that the first violin is mostly accompanied by the three other instruments, often even with orchestral tremolos and timpani imitations in the violoncello. The second quartet, the first to be composed in this series of three, conveys an elegiac and passionate tone and displays expressive passages together with powerful accents.

Munchner Rundfunkorchester Schirmer - Die Vier Grobiane - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The conductor Ulf Schirmer has a special knack for the light Muse - as his regular operetta performances with the Munich Radio Orchestra, many of them documented on cpo, have shown over the years. Munich was also the site of the 1906 premiere of Die vier Grobiane / I quatro rusteghi by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, a work answering to the description of a modern comic opera and displaying this composer's typical combination of marvelously chatty parlando and charming melodicism. There are two sides to the conflict fueling the plot four curmudgeonly husbands who believe that they can and should exercise absolute rule over their wives and children and female characters who engage in intrigues. The action of the opera is set in Venice and elaborates a source text by Carlo Goldoni (1760). The composer scores his points with a tone of considerable lightness, a small orchestral ensemble entrusted with the presentation of a famous intermezzo, and spirited melodies in part based on folk songs. The wealth of ideas developed in his harmonic scheme remaining within tonal limits is also surprising. Album Tracks 1. I Quatro Rusteghi, Opera (Die Vier Grobiane - Gesamtaufnahme in Deutscher Sprache) 2. Vorspiel 3. 1. Akt 4. Frau Mutter? 5. Still, Da Ist Er 6. Also Sagt, Wird Was D'raus 7. Na Endlich, Die WÄR' Nun Draußen 8. Verwandlung 9. Mein Speiglein Sagt Mir Immer 10. Er Ist Hier 11. Lieblicher Mensch! 12. Ja, Ich Tu' Es Ganz Gewisslich 13. Marina? 14. Beifall 15. Intermezzo 16. 2. Akt 17. Ganz Gewiss, Ich SPÜR's 18. Was Soll's? 19. Gut' Mittag 20. Vermählt Euch 21. O, WÜNSCH' Guten Mittag Allerseits 22. Bein Ergegener Diener 23. Was Tut Ihr Dort? 24. Ei Nun, Seid Ihr Hier? 25. Beifall 26. 3. Akt 27. HM! O Dieses Schnöde Weibervolk 28. O Meine Süßen Herrchen 29. Gnade, Ach Wir Bittten 30. Beifall
