Arrels (Roots) represents a new approach to traditional Valencian music, interpreting it through the prism of the early music repertoire. After three decades working to recover our musical heritage, Capella de Ministrers felt it was time to undertake a re-evaluation of music from the oral tradition by seeking out the links between this tradition and the oldest known compositional forms (those found in threshing songs and lullabies, in instrumental pieces with irregular beats, and in the chants of the auroros ('dawn singers') as well as the more famous boleros, fandangos and peteneras, whose commonalities of form and harmonic structure with passacaglias and ostinatos suggest that they too originated in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries. Arrels presents songs and instrumental pieces that trace and reaffirm the oral traditions of a rich and diverse musical world, reuniting the early music of it's manuscripts or printings with the oral traditions of it's people. Risonanze is the début solo album of London-based viola da gamba player Ibrahim Aziz, who is one of the greatest performers of the instrument of his generation. This recording is a performance of immense expression, expertly delivered on a viol made by English string maker Barak Norman in 1712. The album includes one of the highlights of the baroque era the Cello Sonata No. 2 by J.S. Bach as well as other baroque works. Risonanze also includes contemporary works, including one specially written for Aziz. Popular between the 15th-18th centuries, the viol has a unique quality of the sound through plangent tones of it's middle voice, silvery and vibrant high notes, and the depth of it's bass and human-like qualities. It's bow is played with a technique that discourages sharp attacks on the strings, but instead draws out and threads together each note like beautiful pearls on a maiden's neck, glowing with a silky halo. This quality of sound is not volume but resonance. Album Tracks 1. Cello Suite No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1008 2. Suite Estiu (2016) 3. 3 Unaccompanied Pieces 4. Journeying (2018) 5. Sonata (V) in D minor
