About this product

2019 . Modern Nature is a project from Jack Cooper (Ultimate Painting, Mazes) and Will Young (BEAK, Moon Gangs). On their debut recording, How to Live, urban and rural intertwine. Throughout this continuous work, where no song ever really seems to end, there's a feeling of constant forward motion. It's as if the band is laying down train tracks and riding them simultaneously. You can hear all kinds of landscapes passing by. Cooper and Young s organic compositions gain muscle through the thoughtful cello of Rupert Gillett, the insistent drumming of Aaron Neveu (Woods), and the expressive saxophone of Jeff Tobias (Sunwatchers). The entire album courses with both precision and vitality, and is a work of surprising layers and limitless depths. Modern Nature may have been inspired by the line between urban and rural, but with How To Live they've gone a step further, and created their own complete world.

Modern Nature - No Fixed Point In Space - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

No Fixed Point In Space, the third full-length album by Jack Cooper's Modern Nature, takes the palette of sound and themes that were honed on 2021's Island Of Noise and launches them into an expansive world of openness and vivid technicolour. It's a music that hasn't been heard before; as melodic as anything Cooper has produced but framed by rhythms and instrumentation that reflect the chaos, unpredictability and colour of the natural world. InchWith this record,Inch Cooper explains, InchI wanted the music to reflect nature beginnings and endings, arrivals and departures, process and chance. I wanted the music and the words to feel like roots, branches, mycelium, the intricacies of a dawn chorus, neurons firing, the unknown. The way you see or hear music in your head is abstract and magic... often more beautiful than what eventually appears on tape. When you sit down with an instrument and begin translating an idea, it quickly conforms. I've tried to develop this music without thinking in terms of set rhythms, time signatures, folk or pop structures, syntax; the devices you associate with the music world which I come from. I wanted to make music that was abstract, free and honest, whilst still being predominantly tonal and recognisably song based. It feels like time to make something that no one has heard before.Inch

Modern Nature - The Heat Warps - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

When we played the music from our last album, No Fixed Point In Space, it felt like we were already pulling away from the free, open-ended approach we had spent fi ve years trying to achieve. One night during the tour at Cafe Oto in London, something clicked. Our live sets started gravitating towards rhythm and hooks. It was clear that the trio - myself, Jim and Jeff - were onto something. And then we met Tara. She and I played together at an improvised music night and, for about 45 seconds during one of the pieces, a new path became clear. So Tara joined the band. The new line-up felt alive and direct. So an approach to songwriting that had become abstract snapped into focus. I think these are the best songs I've written and the best group I've been in. The music and ideas we've always wanted to communicate are alive but we've shifted; moved into a parallel universe. The heat warps. Jack CooperThe Heat Warps will be released 29th August 2025 via Bella Union.
