Nixon was Lambchop's fifth LP, and the first record of any kind that the band had released in over a year, after a half-decade in which scarcely three months went by without some kind of new Lambchop music. Starting with the swell of horns in the middle of album opener InchThe Old Gold Shoe,Inch Nixon glides easily from one unexpected grace note to the next, peppering in funk, R&B, gospel, country, vintage folk-and integrating them all, not presenting them discretely. Lambchop has always taken it's Nashville origins seriously, making use of the wide variety of talented musicians who live and work in Music City. The double-CD includes the original album plus a bonus disc containing White Sessions 1998 How I Met Cat Power, a remastered live solo session Kurt recorded in 1998. Këkht Aräkh is the Ukrainian project founded in 2018 by Dmitry Marchenko.Originally released on the Finnish tag Livor Mortis in 2021, Pale Swordsman goesto even greater extents in building a bold and atmospheric sonic palette, and it's nowseeing a worldwide reissue via Brooklyn tag Sacred Bones.For the sound design of the album, Dmitry was inspired by The Stooges' Raw Power todeliver a more soft sounding album, decisively less InchmetalInch. Traditional black metal songstructures still persist in songs like InchNight DescendsInch and InchIn The GardenInch. However,their rawness and fast tempos is quickly cut through by dark ambient passages inInchAmorInch and InchIntroInch and softly played desolate ballads like InchNocturneInch and InchLilyInch.The crown jewel is the album closer InchSwordsmanInch, a track that displays a superb gothicsensibility, a poem recited over a deeply melancholic piano melody. InchThe Christianconcept of a person ridding themselves of evil to find inner peace or to be able toleave this world safely has become the core inspiration for the song.Inch Dmitry explainsInchHowever, this is not the only reading possible. I purposely avoid specifics in my lyricsso that the listener can always give the song their own meaning.InchThe inspiration for the concept of the album also came from David Bowie's TheRise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. In late 2019, Kurt Wagner was experimenting with something new, something that would eventually reveal itself as Lambchop's Showtunes. By taking simple guitar tracks and converting them into MIDI piano tracks, InchSuddenly I discovered I could 'play' the piano,Inch he says. InchIt was a revelation that from those conversions, I was able to manipulate each note and add, subtract, arrange the chords and melody into a form that didn't have any of the limitations I had with my previous methods of writing with a guitar.Inch Removing these limitations led to a surprising new sound, something akin to show tunes but with edges sanded down and viewed through Kurt's own specific lens.
