- Description: Moon King is the synthpop project of Toronto-born singer & producer Daniel Benjamin. Voice Of Lovers is his second since embracing underground disco and synthpop, recorded between Toronto & Detroit following the of InchIn & OutInch, his 2017 debut track for Montreal tag Arbutus Records (TOPS, Sean Nicholas Savage). In the early 2010's Daniel was part of the flourishing electronic music scene in Montreal, performing as a touring musician with Grimes, Sean Nicholas Savage and Doldrums, all while beginning to write & produce his own music. A 2016 move to Detroit and immersion in that city's vibrant dance music and DJ culture soon began to influence his own recordings. It's clear upon listening to Voice Of Lovers that Daniel is constantly learning & borrowing as he listens to music, synthesizing something fresh out of dollar-bin disco & new wave, boogie & euro sleaze. With each track comes the feeling of discovery, of finding that just the right acid-soaked synth or muted snare fill can give a track a little more bounce. Around the Fur the follow-up to Deftones' passionate, aggressive Adrenaline, sees the California quartet expanding on the sheer rage of their earlier work, adding new, more sinister shades to their already extreme sound. The opening InchMy Own Summer (Shove It),Inch serves as an introduction to the album's sonic theme sinewy guitars and eerie whispers alternate with fast, violent crunch. Sepultura's Max Cavallero contributes guitar and vocals to InchHeadup,Inch while InchMXInch finds singer Chino trading off vocal lines with Annalynn Cunningham, (wife of Deftones' drummer Abe) in an acerbic take on the rock star mentality. Vocal acrobat Moreno attacks a variety of styles his breathy, psychotic recitations sound downright industrial, while the album's calmer, more brooding moments show his gift for haunting melody. Behind him, guitarist Stephen Carpenter's heavy wall of sound is astoundingly muscular, yet inspiringly agile. When Deftones' hellish fury hits full tilt, as it always does on this album, Moreno's voice erupts into screams which are best described as otherworldly, transforming this intense musical firestorm into a hurtling juggernaut of aggression.
