Moss / Gajewska / Polish Radio & Television Orch - Symphonie Concertante / Adagio III / Portraits - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The Symphony No. 3, called the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, for solo soprano and orchestra, Op. 36 by Henryk Mikolaj Górecki (1976) is often mentioned in different contexts as one of the most original masterpieces of 20th-century music not only to come out of Poland, but from the world. This presents the listener with a live recording of this extraordinary piece performed in the concert hall of the Poznan Philharmonic on 4 February, 1995. It is an outstanding artistic creation of Andrzej Boreyko, a conductor who was just about to launch his world career then, and Ewa Izykowska - one of the most interesting and versatile Polish singers.

The album of the Witold Lutoslawski Chamber Philharmonic in Lomza, devoted to contemporary instrumental concertos, makes it possible to confront the aesthetics of three Polish composers, highly regarded today. Each of the pieces recorded on this album is maintained in relation to the others in a somewhat related (corresponding to the 20th-century neoclassicism) postmodern aesthetics, which undoubtedly facilitates the perception of the whole material. Although the presented concertos in no way refer to the musical tradition of the avant garde, many of the applied compositional resources (ingenious instruments, varied means responsible for the form's architecture) testify to the individualism of these three works.

Francesco Bottigliero's numerous interests, creative energy and talent could fill more than one artistic biography. The artist pursued his passions while studying piano interpretation, composition and music education at the same time and then conducting and philosophy. On this album, we present this versatile artist in a triple role As a composer, conductor, pianist, and chamber musician, presenting pieces inspired by known and important to him figures from the world of art. Bottigliero's musical language is based on playing with sound and sonoristics, formed on already culturally coded associations. Although by definition it is tonal, the composer often uses very revealing and innovative means. The inspiration for this music is poetry, painting, architecture. It is the instrumentation that is unusual in the Portraits project, in which the main role is played by chamber string ensembles constructed in such a way as to leave room for genuine virtuosity, inherent in chamber music, in their sound palette, eagerly extended beyond classical combinations.
