About this product
Ime and again, composers - well-known and lesser-known - have arranged Franz Schubert's piano songs for orchestra. These versions are not in any way intended to cast doubt upon the powerful quality of the originals, they merely place them in a different light, and/or attempt to make them easier to perform on a larger scale - when an art song cannot be performed in an intimate salon or chamber music hall, it can also make an impact in a large concert hall. Baritone Benjamin Appl has compiled nineteen such arrangements from the 19th and 20th centuries for this new CD from BR-KLASSIK. T he Münchner Rundfunkorchester, conducted by Oscar Jockel, provides accompaniment that is subtle and in keeping with the work. InchTo my ear, it is often quite insulting, in a giant hall and after an orchestral number, to have to listen to a singer performing lieder to a spindly piano accompaniment!Inch Max Reger scolded, and he went on to take appropriate action by orchestrating several piano songs, including thirteen by Schubert. Many famous composers were not above taking on the role of arranger. Indeed, they even saw an artistic challenge in InchstagingInch the Lied in a new and colourful way using the possibilities of the orchestra - and without altering the musical substance in the process. The versions of Schubert's InchAn die MusikInch, InchI'm AbendrotInch, InchNacht und TräumeInch, InchPrometheusInch and InchErlkönigInch recorded here are by Max Reger; Anton Webern created those for InchDu bist die RuhInch, InchTränenregenInch or InchDer WegweiserInch; Johannes Brahms arranged InchGeheimesInch, Jacques Offenbach the InchStändchenInch, and Benjamin Britten InchDie ForelleInch. Further arrangements are by conductor Felix Mottl (InchDer Tod und das MädchenInch), lied accompanist Alexander Schmalcz (InchAbendsternInch, InchAn SilviaInch) and composer Kurt Gillmann (InchGanymedInch).

Giacomo Puccini wrote only a few works for voice with piano accompaniment. Eleven songs were published during his lifetime; others remained lost for over a century. In 2010, a first critical edition of the total of sixteen vocal compositions was presented. Several of them are closely related to Puccini's operas and had already been written during his studies in Milan. It was this edition that inspired Johannes X. Schachtner to arrange the piano score-like accompaniments for orchestra. In early February 2023, the US tenor Charles Castronovo sang these sixteen songs for the first time together with the Münchner Rundfunkorchester conducted by Ivan Repušic. Charles Castronovo has worked with the Münchner Rundfunkorchester ever since a concert performance of Mozart's La clemenza di Tito in 2006. In the 2023/24 season, he will return to Munich as the orchestra's InchArtist in ResidenceInch. BR-KLASSIK now presents the CD InchGiacomo Puccini - I CantiInch. Puccini's piano songs are entirely in the Italian tradition of the 19th century. Most Italian opera composers - from Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini to Verdi - also wrote lieder, but unlike the German art song, these were always closely related to bel canto, the Inchbeautiful songInch. Priority is given here to an irresistible melos over a mostly simple accompaniment, which is nevertheless supported by charming harmonies; hardly ever do these Italian songs eschew the dramatic flair of the opera composer. In the course of his work, Johannes X. Schachtner was increasingly fascinated by the way in which these songs, which were written for very different occasions and have no contextual connection, nevertheless convey the highly exciting story of a composer's life. From the youthful, almost innocent love song InchA teInch to Puccini's last songs with the impressive InchMorire?Inch - but also small album leaves such as the setti

The combination of Johann Sebastian Bach's music with jazz has a long tradition, the beginnings of which go back to the middle of the last century. For a very special recording of this exciting hybrid genre, the artistic director of the ensemble, Benedikt Haag, worked with Maruan Sakas and Maximilian Höcherl, two young jazz musicians from the Bavarian capital. The task for both of them to process Johann Sebastian Bach's motets for choir and jazz ensemble. Maximilian Höcherl and Maruan Sakas recorded InchSing the Lord a new songInch (BWV 225), InchThe spirit helps our weaknessInch (BWV 226), InchDo not be afraid, I am with youInch (BWV 228) and InchPraise the Lord all Gentiles Inch(BWV 230) four of the six Bach motets. The result is new compositions based on these famous vocal works, in which the individual musical background of the arrangers can be recognized.
