About this product
This album offers an intimate journey into Schumann's world through three emblematic works. At it's heart stands the original 1841 version of the Fourth Symphony, a rarely performed score whose transparency and almost chamber-like clarity reveal a Schumann of striking immediacy, far from the heavier later revision. The Cello Concerto and the Fantasia for violin, the latter performed here in an idiomatic and expressive transcription for cello, both belong to Schumann's final Dusseldorf years and share an atmosphere of shifting moods and luminous shadows. Throughout the album, Alexander Rudin - appearing both as conductor and as solo cellist - joins Musica Viva in shaping a vivid, deeply human portrait of Schumann's imagination and it's fragile, radiant beauty.

It was the middle of the night in Germany, when the phone of the world-famous Whisky A Go-Go club, where all the great acts had played the Doors, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, was ringing. We frequently found ourselves talking on the telephone at night, this time in need of a replacement for the impending Rockpalast night at the Grugahalle in Essen, as The Kinks had cancelled their appearance due to an internal band crisis. That's when Rockpalast director Christian Wagner remembered his penchant for SPIRIT's music. We enlisted Spirit for a Rockpalast Eurovision broadcast in March 1978. The band's concert turned out to be one of the highlights of the first Rockpalast series (1977 to 1986). At the age of fifteen, Randy California had played with Jimi Hendrix and his band of that time. That his guitar style was strongly influenced by Jimi became apparent during the Rockpalast concert when he performed Hendrix' versions of the Dylan numbers InchLike A Rolling StoneInch and InchAll Along The WatchtowerInch, adding an imposing bass foundation with his Moog synthesizer, which he operated like the foot pedal of an organ. Randy and his stepfather, drummer Ed Cassidy, had been the hard core of the numerous Spirit line-ups since 1968. Cassidy's drum set-up was impressive and included two timpani. Larry InchFuzzyInch Knight completed the three-piece whose sophisticated arrangements consisting of rock, jazz, blues and psychedelic elements still had all the power of a InchsimpleInch classic rock trio. A special highlight came towards the end of the show when Dickey Betts, who had appeared on stage with his band Great Southern before Spirit, brought out his wall of amps again to jam with Spirit. One review even claimed that this jam had been the best performance broadcast by German television by that time.

Bulgarian pianist Martin Ivanov, who attained great international reputation for his debut album with the waltzes by Frederic Chopin, dedicates his second to the music of Robert Schumann. The Fantasy Pieces Op. 12 as well as the Novelletes Op. 21 were composed during a period in Schumann's life which was affected by the death of his mother, the forced separation from Clara, and the estrangement from his father. Much of the cheerfulness and much of the deadly seriousness in this music has this biographical background; also, Schumann probably always thought of his beloved Clara as a possible interpreter of these works. Martin Ivanov accomplishes once again to boast with supreme technical accuracy and deep emotional intuition. Born in 1990, Ivanov began his piano studies with his mother, who taught him through his high school education at the National School of Arts in Ruse, Bulgaria where he graduated in 2009. Since 2012, Martin has been studying with the very active pianist and conductor Professor Stefan Vladar. His solo career has taken him to festivals and competitions across Europe, where he has found great success.
