My Own Holiday - Reason to Bleed - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Black with White highlights. Limited Loser Edition on graphite vinyl. On her kaleidoscopic second album, The Starrr Of The Queen Of Life, Debby Friday defines success on her own terms. InchI want to be a starrr, I can't hide that desire,Inch she says. InchBut what I don't want is to live someone else's dream or to follow a pre-set path.Inch For the Nigerian-Canadian polymath, to be a starrr is to live at the extremes public versus private, hubris versus humility, flying versus falling.Being a starrr means embracing the apocalyptic hedonism of an all-night rave-finding communion in the Inchdark room, girls in line for the bathroomInch on the buzzing house anthem InchAll I Wanna Do Is PartyInch. It means swapping lines about bottles on ice and getting freaky on the dance floor with Detroit techno prodigies HiTech on InchIn The ClubInch-while admitting that she is, in fact, Inchbarely on the dance floor these days.Inch It's the sound of discovering what comes after the kind of success most artists only dream about-how to burn brightly without burning out. Across 11 songs, The Starrr Of The Queen Of Life showcases Friday's chameleonic vocals. From the sparse, gossamer beauty of the lovelorn InchLeave.Inch to the locomotive post-punk of InchDarker The Better.InchWinning the Polaris Prize in 2023 for her debut LP, GOOD LUCK, only made Debby Friday want to grind harder InchI'm tryna see more/ Man, I want the payoffInch she raps over laser-like synths on the effortless copycat kiss-off InchLipsync.Inch But life on the razor's edge can only be sustainable for so long During a nonstop tour schedule in support of the album, she fell violently ill. The diagnosis? Stress-induced shingles. That experience forced Friday to turn her focus inward. The next year saw a change in management, in her routine and priorities. To help bring her vision of radical honesty on the dance floor

There's something about Tony Holiday that draws people together. In fact, community has been at the core of Holiday's young career from the beginning. Since relocating from Salt Lake City to Memphis in 2017, Holiday has been at the center of a soul blues revival in Memphis, anchored by a contingent of young, savvy well-schooled musicians with a Inchfamily-likeInch attitude and a strong belief in one another. Mentored by past legends, Holiday and this loose Memphis collective are building on the city's rich traditions and carrying them forward. Motel Mississippi, Holiday's 2nd solo album, was recorded about an hour outside Memphis in Coldwater, Mississippi, at Zebra Ranch, the studio of the late great Memphis legend Jim Dickinson (The Rolling Stones, Big Star). Combining the sounds of North Mississippi Hill Country, Delta Blues, and Memphis soul, Motel Mississippi is equal parts hypnotic blues, driving soul, and juke joint stomper. The album consists of six originals and two covers, InchRob & StealInch by Paul Wine Jones and InchNobody But YouInch by Asie Payton. Like with previous projects, Motel Mississippi began as a collaborative effort, this time between Holiday, guitarist/songwriter A.J. Fullerton and guitarist/producer Dave Gross who shared production duties with Fullerton. Rich sonic layers provide a forward-thinking quality to these productions, conjuring up a vibe that's modern and retro at the same time. The drone and drive of songs like InchRob & StealInch and InchGet ByInch contrast with juke joint grooves like InchJust As GoneInch while diving into new territory with the Cajun-infused double harmonica instrumental InchYazoo River.Inch The album was recorded by another mainstay of recent Memphis recording, Kevin Houston (Southern Avenue, North Mississippi Allstars, G. Love). Other musicians on the album include Lee Williams Jr. On drums, Terrance Grayson
