Neal Francis - Return To Zero - VINYL LP

I just wanted to be honest about everything, from my musical influencesto my story,Inch muses Neal Francis. After years of dishonest living-consumed by drugs, alcohol, and addiction-such sincerity is jarring fromthe 30-year-old Chicago-based musician. Liberated from a selfdestructive past and born anew in sobriety, Francis has captured aninspired collection of songs steeped in New Orleans rhythms, Chicagoblues, and early 70s rock n' roll. There is a deep connection betweenFrancis's childhood-his obsession with boogie woogie piano, his father'sgift of a dusty Dr. John LP-and the songs he's created. The result is anastonishing collection of material without parallel in the contemporaryfunk and soul scene. The influences are unmistakable the vocal stylingsof Allen Toussaint and Leon Russell; the second line rhythms of TheMeters and Dr. John; the barroom rock 'n' roll of The Rolling Stones; thegospel soul of Billy Preston; the roots music of The Band. Neal Francis - InchIn Plain SightInch Neal Francis' sophomore album offers up a body of work both enchanting and painfully self-aware. Recorded entirely on tape and mixed by GRAMMY-winner Dave Fridmann (Spoon, Tame Impala,) the record spotlights his refined yet free-spirited piano playing, an instrument he took up at age 4. The songs came to life over the course of a tumultuous year spent living in a (possibly) haunted church in Chicago. The result a portrait of profound upheaval and weary resilience. While Phasor feels loose and expansive, it's Lange's tightest collection-deep, atmospheric, meticulously executed. It's aligned with 2019's This Is How You Smile, which found him incorporating more upfront drums and bass and focused grooves. Sequentially, it follows the expansive hour-plus long Far In, whose title was inspired by new age legend Laraaji and created in lockdown, in Marfa, Texas - lyrically digging into connection and focused on being in quarantine. Phasor, in turn, is an homage to going outside again. It's a returning-to-life record, remembering what the sun feels like and letting it warm your skin. A1. LFO (Lupe Finds Oliveros) A2.
