About this product

The process behind this work originates from when Oslo Cathedral commissioned a large scaled work by Nils Henrik Asheim for the inauguration of the church's new main pipe organ in 1998. The composer suggested including a choir to create a cycle of texts from the Book of Psalms, and the Oslo Cathedral Choir were more than willing to participate, with their dedication to the piece being integral to the work's development. Organ builders Ryde & Berg made both the main organ (with 53 voices) and the choir organ (16 voices), with the combination of the two becoming central to the concept of the work. The two instruments bathe the room in an immersive soundscape, with the choir representing the voice inside this. The composer himself chose a selection of lines taken from 21 hymns, with the view to creating a holistic narrative through use of contrasts. Five InchAllelujahInch movements for organ complete each of the sections of the work. In the 1998 version, these were improvised movements for solo organ, but in the revised version from 2019 the movements were re-composed as organ duos. The titles of these five movements are taken from Psalm 150, v.1-3.

Nils Asheim Henrik - Ballade / Hundrad Hardingtonar - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Do the best classical works have anything to gain from transcription to the organ? What new dimensions can be explored? Nils Henrik Asheim attempts to answer these questions and more by transferring both Edvard Grieg's InchBalladeInch and Geirr Tveitt's InchHundrad HardintonarInch to the concert organ's color palette. This project has become one that should garner considerable interest! The InchBalladeInch is Grieg's greatest work for solo piano. Through a magnificent, epic range of variations over a Norwegian folk song, he wrote away his grief over the loss of his parents, his marital problems, and his artistic stagnation. Asheim's organ edition closely follows these restless mood changes, from the lyrical to the triumphant. Geir Tveitt hit a gold mine when he combined folk tunes from Hardanger with his unique sense of harmony and orchestration. Asheim took inspiration from the rich spectrum of colors of the Hundrad Hardingtonar version for orchestra and pulled out the organ's entire stock of creative sound combinations for the task. This selection counts 18 tunes, from the poignant InchVelkomne med AeraInch to the hypnotic InchHardingolInch to the mystical InchFolgafodne fortel ingjenting.Inch After five years, Asheim believes that the instrument of the house is ripe for it's first . The 65-stop concert organ from Ryde and Berg in Fredrikstad has been praised for it's organic, warm sound, and is frequently used by performers from home and abroad.
