About this product
The theme song InchYou're DeadInch to the FX show What We Do in the Shadows has fostered a new appreciation for the singular talent that was Norma Tanega. And it's high time, too... Norma was discovered while singing to Catskill summer campers by producer Herb Bernstein, who brought her to Four Seasons songwriter Bob Crewe. Crewe signed her to his New Voice tag, and success was instantaneous the title song to Walkin' My Cat Named Dog went to #22 on the charts. But, despite the album's folk-pop trappings, Norma Tanega was not an artist destined to stay at the top of the charts for long; her voice was unconventional, and her songs were too idiosyncratic, not sticking to typical song structure or even meter (for example, InchNo Stranger Am IInch is set to a 5/4 time signature). In fact, Tanega's songs were so unusual that she had to hire session musicians to play them on the North American tour she took to support the album instead of her erstwhile back-up band The Outsiders! Upon returning, she then embarked on a British tour that was to change her life forever; there she met Dusty Springfield, and the two embarked on an artistic and romantic relationship that prompted Tanega to move to London for five years. After the pair broke up, Tanega wound up moving to California and shifted to playing percussion in more experimental settings, following the wayward muse that makes Walkin' My Cat Named Dog such an entrancing and unique listening experience to this day. We're pressing a green and purple vinyl edition to honor What We Do in the Shadows as it enters the final season of a great, six-year run... and to give folks another chance to hear the amazing and haunting sounds of Norma Tanega!Side One1. Peter Orth writes InchWhile it may seem that everything has been recorded in the classical canon, I've found there still is room for new interpretations. Oddly, the piano music of Johannes Brahms has by no means been exhausted. In my experience with American music teaching, the great masters were very much handled with a certain distant reverence - when in actuality they need to be approached naturally. Coming to live in Germany where the composers lived and worked removes these pedestals in favor of understanding their lives in the context of their surroundings. Having been in the same room to hear the likes of Callas, Baker, Bernstein, Celibidache, Horowitz, Rubinstein, Serkin, to mention only a few, showed me viscerally what kind of fire is involved in making a musical statement. Perhaps having been witness to a time now gone, arguably the last of the great performing generation, has informed in my ethos a kind of measuring stick against which to measure myself and be responsible to. Whether I can live up to any of it is not for me to say.Inch

Vinyl LP pressing. Norma Tanega is best-known for her single 'Walkin' My Cat Named Dog' which became an unlikely international hit in 1966. It not only brought her into the spotlight, but to the UK where she toured, appeared on TV and started a long-term relationship with Dusty Springfield. Tanega would later move to the UK to live with Springfield. Still a musical force she signed to the UK arm of RCA-Victor and in 1971 released a single 'Nothing Much Is Happening Today' / 'Antarctic Rose' and an album called InchI Don't Think It Will Hurt If You SmileInch. Neither sold strongly and splitting up with Springfield, Tanega returned to America. In recent years original copies of InchI Don't Think It Will Hurt If You SmileInch have become highly sought after by collectors of folk and psychedelic folk and change hands for up to £400. The album has, until now, never been reissued on vinyl. Produced by Don Paul, Tanega worked in the studio with multi-instrumentalist Mike Moran and the results were an amazing confection. 'Nothing Much Is Happening Today' might have been an unlikely single but today sounds like an earworm especially when halfway through it sounds like Pink Floyd are backing Tanega. 'What More In The World Could Anyone Be Looking For' appears in two versions - one lushly arranged and the other presented as simple folk song. Both are winners. 'A Goodbye Song' is a small treasure box about losing love. The album is glued together by a number of short instrumentals from harpsichord pieces to strummed magnificence. All told InchI Don't Think It Will Hurt If You SmileInch is a lost classic and Ace are delighted to put it back on vinyl where it deserves.
