Oakland CA's Blue Ocean have been working around the fringes of the Bay Area indie scene since 2019, honing their very particular noise-soaked racket into a unique and instantly identifiable sound. They blend elements of shoegaze, pop, noise rock and electronics into a dense, sometimes disorienting soundworld that embodies a spectral mystery that recalls forebears like Disco Inferno, Bark Psychosis and Flying Saucer Attack. InchFertile StateInch is their debut album, following on the heels of 3 tape EPs and a LP drawn from those tapes that sold out instantly on in 2021. Songs like InchOde,Inch InchFertile StateInch and InchSyncnineInch show how much Blue Ocean has grown in the last few years. They've easily shrugged off many of the markers of their punk/indie roots, allowing their experimental urges free rein and and the noise to find it's own level. It's a bracing, invigorating album that truly rewards deep listening and points the way forward to an intriguing future.1. Ode2. Elated Prose3. Neutron Mob4. Fertile State5. Ion Drift6. Take A Care7. Quicksails' approach on Blue Rise foregrounds his palette of modular and digital synthesizers, resulting in a strain of music that brims with shimmering textures and rich, layered harmonies. More than a full-on pivot to another style, Quicksails enters into a mode of production that highlights his melodic sensibilities and his ear for sophisticated DAW-based composition. Each track unfolds as a self-contained world replete with fluctuating tiers of fine-grain synth-tones that morph as they stack together into systems of polyrhythmic activity or smear into all-consuming drift. Quicksails lays out a menu of contrasting sentimental spaces and self-contained sonic tableaus, each of which refracts the sun's light out across new terrains. Blue Rise cements Quicksails not only as a master synthesist and arranger of far-flung sound sources, but as a composer attuned to the time dilating properties and the instantaneous emotional impacts of the zones that he lays out before us.A1) CypressA2) Believe the CloudsA3) Melrose MoveA4) Sid's Symphony #2B1) Blue RiseB2) Ice Walk (With Love)B3) Florian's BrushB4) Woodhaven
