Description: The Irish romance ONCE may be a musical, but it is miles away from the traditional Hollywood idea of people bursting into song. Glen Hansard (frontman for indie rock band The Frames) plays the guy, a street musician who is playing for change when he meets the girl (Marketa Irglova), an immigrant from the Czech Republic. The pair immediately bond over their shared love of music (he is a guitarist, and she plays the piano), and the film chronicles their tentative relationship. ONCE IS UNIQUE
Once is wonderfully unique and it contains some stunning music, but dramatically the film often feels inert and half formed, a series of vignettes rather than a well constructed story. Carney seems only too aware of these facts, given some of the comments he makes in his commentary and on the featurette included on this Blu-ray disc as a supplement. But there's a certain ineluctable charm to Once that helps it to overcome some of its flaws, and the music in the film acts as a soothing balm that washes over some of the rough corners on display in other parts of this outing. High definition can only do so much with limited source material, and that's the case with both the video and audio presentations here. With all these caveats in mind, Once still comes Recommended.
This is the director's 1st movie that I know of. The music is great!!! It is what's keeps the movie going esp. in the beginning where it is somewhat slow and a little undeveloped HOWEVER it gets very good once they go into a recording studio. I found the music much better than "Inside Llewyn Davis" (their song won the Academy Award) and it was more upbeat as well as the lead character much more likable! The music alone is worth the whole movie. I will look forward to more movies from this director as well as more music from the 2 lead characters!

Cute story, good insight into music industry.
Heard about the movie after a friend saw the Broadway Show and raved about the music. I liked the story and their dialogue for the most part. Some of it was hard to understand due to the strong accent. The insight into the music recording process was fun to see.

Parts musical, documentary, and biopic
Pacing might be considered a bit meandering in this film, but the music and subtle but genuine performances and setting feel great. The music of course the film's heart and soul, and it's worth at least one watch simply to enjoy that :-)
Such a great movie , Glenn Hansard is an amazing singer and performer. This movie has a lot of heart. You can tell it was made by musicians it, truly captured the creative and demo recording process in very subtle and concise manner and told a great simple story. Highly recommended!
