About this product
Explore the dreamlike world of Rudolf Nureyev's interpretation of The Nutcracker. In his imaginative retelling of a 19th-century classic, the young Clara is propelled by dark forces from the realm of childhood into a radiant kingdom where she takes center stage. With a striking psychoanalytic dimension to the traditional festive favorite, Clara's surreal journey becomes an allegory for the hopes and dreams of a young girl on the cusp of adulthood, her transformation evoked by the whirling snowflakes and glittering sugar of Tchaikovsky's famous score. This 1968 recording is a golden opportunity to watch a great historical performance from The Royal Ballet featuring the illustrious pairing of Rudolf Nureyev and Merle Park in a scintillating display of virtuosity. The Nutcracker, Op. 71 (Royal Ballet, 1968) (NTSC)

In Tchaikovsky's magical ballet, Clara receives a present - a nutcracker which turns into a prince. With a humorous, imaginative staging and ballet scenes acted out in great detail, the Salzburg Marionette Theatre will immerse you in the story of Clara and the Nutcracker. Artfully directed puppets and puppeteers with the great ability to breathe life into the figures created this wonderful interpretation of Tchaikovsky's masterwork. Established in 1913, the Salzburg Marionette Theatre is one of the oldest continuing marionette theaters in the world. The ensemble performs a large repertoire of operas, ballets, and other productions for both children and adults, exclusively using marionettes.
Tchaikovsky's unforgettable score combines with the magical choreography inspired by Lev Ivanov in an atmosphere of fantasy and the supernatural. Hoffmann's Christmas story unfolds with breathtaking splendour and beauty in the most festive and enduring of all ballets. The Royal Ballet, whose Director, Sir Anthony Dowell, plays Drosselmeyer, is joined by the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. Anthony Dowell, Alina Cojocaru, Ivan Putrov, Miyako Yoshida, Jonathan Cope the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House.
Damian Smith, Elizabeth Powell, Davit Karapetyan, DAvid Arce, Yuan Yuan Tan, Pierre-Francois Vilanoba, Vanessa Zahorian, and Maria Kochetkova perform in this San Francisco Ballet production of the Tchaikovsky ballet conducted by Martin West.
