Bruckner's Second Symphony is a rare enough encounter in it's 1877 version, but it's virtually unperformed in the 1872 original version. This is not owing to some deficiency of the earlier ideas compared to the later alterations. It's mainly habit and convenience because to get new parts and re-learn something ostensibly known, that differs in a great many details, means an extra expense of effort and resources. That's a shame, really, because it is decidedly worth discovering the original, not-yet-ironed-out rawness of Bruckner's early masterpiece, which was something unheard of at the time - but needn't remain unheard now.

Bruckner revised his Third Symphony more than any other There are three manuscript versions, two published versions from within his lifetime, a separate manuscript of the Adagio, and surviving revision fragments from 1874, 1875, and 1876. In it's first version (here recorded), it is Bruckner's longest and most overtly Wagnerian symphony. When Brucknerian extraordinaire Robert Simpson got to study Nowak's edition of this version in 1977, he threw his hitherto held opinions overboard and declared it an Inchachievement... progressively maimed in successive versions.Inch As part of this completist cycle, Markus Poschner will present the work in all states of pruning, but this is the obvious point to start at.

This is the second recording for Quartz from Olwen Morris, offering a cross section of works from the Classical period through the early Contemporary. Olwen Morris grew up in war-time rural Wales, where she was first taught by Josef Gruenbaum, a musician and lawyer from Stuttgart, who with his family had fled Nazi Germany. Olwen made extraordinary progress, and enrolled at 14 as the youngest student at Cardiff College of Music, (later becoming the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama). She soon made her first early live broadcasts, including a concerto with the BBC Welsh Orchestra, and debut concerts in Cardiff's City Hall and Reardon Smith Theatre. Teaching, directing church music, organ improvisation and chamber music have all played parts throughout a lifetime in music, but solo playing continues to remain the vital center of it all. Her performances of the Viennese classics are remarkable for their insight and depth, and her playing of French music for sensitivity to sensual sound, also reflecting her long close association with northern France, where her artist husband, David Morris painted.
