About this product
With his early theatrical successes, Wolf-Ferrari brought a transparency of sound and a sense of lightness and charm to the realm of Italian opera. Alongside these qualities came a renewal of opera buffa, of which he proved to be a master - exemplified in the overtures and excerpts heard here. The comic energy and vibrancy of Il segreto di Susanna, the melodic beauty of Il campiello and the sweeping lustre of I gioielli della Madonna show how Wolf-Ferrari reinvigorated the genre through his incomparable passion and expression. Austrian conductor Friedrich Haider and the Oviedo Filarmonía have recorded admired Wolf-Ferrari albums for Naxos - see Talitha Kumi! On 8.573716 'The melodic inspiration is consistent, and the performances by the Coro El León de Oro under Friedrich Haider vividly convey the texts and moods' (Fanfare).

![Oviedo Filarmonia - Suite Veneziana / Tryptichon / Divertimento - COMPACT DISCS [CD]](https://pisces.bbystatic.com/image2/BestBuy_US/images/products/c988056f-99b9-4b07-95a0-8b0e7d224fc5.jpg;maxHeight=422;maxWidth=264?format=webp)
Wolf-Ferrari is famous for his operatic works in which he invented a new idiom by transplanting 18th-century Venetian culture into the 20th century. But almost all of the composer's orchestral music dates from his final years and occupies a different expressive realm. The Suite veneziana resonates with melancholy, and the Triptychon is a contemplative, passionate masterpiece of orchestration. Subtle use of counterpoint transforms the Divertimento into a playful exploration of themes, while Arabesken pays tribute to an old friend, the Venetian painter Ettore Tito (1859-1941). His own elegantly simple melody, known as 'Tito's theme', is turned by Wolf-Ferrari into a sequence of sumptuous orchestral variations culminating in a powerful fugue.

Toshiro Mayuzumi was one of Japan's foremost 20th-century composers, enjoying a distinguished international reputation on a par with that of Toru Takemitsu, as well as that of an enfant terrible of the post-war Japanese music world. Versatile and prolific, he contributed music for films, the theatre, the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and broadcasts. His enthusiasm for avant-garde Western music led him to study in Paris, and the Phonologie Symphonique is a synthesis of Varese-like acoustical experiment and serial techniques. The jazz-tinted Bacchanale is Mayuzumi's attempt to produce 'a cosmos of sounds reflecting the vital energies of the origin of music,' and the symphonic poem Samsara is a musical expression of Buddhist teaching, an attempt to escape the seemingly endless cycle of birth and rebirth. This recording first appeared in 1984 on the Marco Polo tag. The relationship between the tag and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra has been one of the most fruitful from the early days of Naxos to the present, right up to their irreplaceable contribution to the brand new Wagner Ring cycle conducted by Jaap van Zweden.
