Paul Hindemith's first instrument was the violin, and so thoroughly did he master it that he rose to become leader of the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra at the age of 19. Even if his focus soon shifted to the viola and to composing, he continued to play and to write for the violin, creating a series of works that fascinatingly mirror the various stages in the development of his musical language, from the vocabulary of late romanticism to the monumental, revivified Baroque idiom of his maturity. In a generous selection of these works, the eminent violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann, who in 2010 was awarded the international Paul Hindemith Prize of the City of Hanau, makes an eloquent case for them, from the Sonata in E flat, composed in 1918 while Hindemith was still serving in the German army on the Western Front, to the strikingly emotional Violin Concerto of 1939, written during his first year of exile from Nazi Germany. Besides the masterly Sonata in C, composed shortly before the Concerto, and the tuneful 1935 Sonata in E, Zimmermann also includes the Solo Sonata, Op.31 No.2, with it's final movement a set of variations on a Mozart song. In the accompanied sonatas Zimmermann enjoys the support of a regular chamber music partner, the pianist Enrico Pace, whereas in the concerto he teams up with Paavo Jeñrvi, another recipient of the Paul Hindemith Prize and principal conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. Together they convey an unusually colorful, shimmering and passionate image of Paul Hindemith, in a commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the death of the composer.

The first recording of Paul Hindemith's InchPlöner MusiktagInch is now released This educational work has not been heard as a whole since it's world premiere in 1932 by the composer himself. Initiated and edited by the conductor Jobst Liebrecht, the musical day was realized in Berlin on 13 October 2008 by the Hans Werner Henze Music School in Marzahn-Hellersdorf as well as the local youth symphony orchestra which were both supported by several children's choirs from Berlin. Even the renowned baritone Dietrich Henschel and musicians of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra could be won over to this large project. The aim of this ambitious initiative is to bring young musicians and professionals together and approach the composer's ideas InchplayfullyInch InchI hope, on the one hand, that this music is perceived as a highlight of Hindemith's educational oeuvre and among his complete worksInch, says conductor Jobst Liebrecht. InchOn the other hand, I hope for the Hans Werner Henze Music School in Marzahn-Hellersdorf or, in general, for the educational policy in Berlin that people remember the roots and ideals with which the music school movement began, and that they move forward from the right sense of tradition.Inch The InchPlöner MusiktagInch sets a whole day to music The four parts Morgenmusik [Morning Music], Tafelmusik [Table Music], Kantate [Cantata] and Abendkonzert [Evening Concert] have been written for different levels of difficulty and instrumentations - from recorder trio to orchestral piece and three-part choir. Hindemith wrote the work for a four-day stay in a boarding school in Plön, Schleswig-Holstein in June 1932 where he made music with pupils.
