Heavy duty camera with the highest L mount megapixel count. A better grip to my hand compared to other mirrorless in the same class, the features, autofocus, loading and everything seemed to be minimally impacted despite the megapixel size. Combining with the modern L lens, this camera is a beast.

The S1R and S1H together made me abandon the company I was faithful to for 16 years. It's the best review I can give. I am a filmmaker AND a photographer. In short: if you are like me and need to do both well THERE IS NO BETTER combo of two cameras on the market right now that will answer all your needs in a more perfect way than these two. The S1H is the cinema king. That's it. It literally bridges the gap between advanced pro market and real Holywood insane cameras that are simply beyond the reach of an average person. It brings all of us much closer to that ellusive quality and look that used to be unachievable on a budget. It's still a considerable budget but... not an astronomic one anymore. The S1R for a change is just really close to perfection for a photographer. In my average size hands it simply feels as if it was made for them. Ideal size and ergonomy. All buttons are exactly where you'd want them. Getting used to this camera and how it functions and operates was so quick I couldn't believe it. After three days it feels as natural as if I've been shooting with it all my life. The quality is also incredible. 47 mpx definitely helps because as clean as it already is at high ISO downsizing the images for web/print brings noise levels further down. It can easily compete with even the legendary 5DM4. No problem. We just used it to shoot some night time photos of Philadelphia all across the ISO range and ISO6400 and the results are just stunning. But then it gets better. Much better. For any scene that doesn't have a lot of motion in it put the camera on a sturdy tripod and switch it to High Resolution Mode. The image coming out of it has... get ready: 187 megapixel resolution. No, it's not a mistake. It's insanely detailed and super sharp (shot JUST with the kit 24-105 lens). This is very, very exciting and massively impressive. Another super cool feature is the ability to control the camera via Panasonic LUMIX app for your smartphone or tablet. You can set the focus, change shutter speed, aperture and a few other details. Most importantly you can use it to shoot remotely from quite a distance. Photo OR video. Very convenient for a lot of different types of work in the field and in a studio. Even at weddings - just imagine the possibilities. I would highly recommend the S1R to anyone. This is truly a fantastic camera for an advanced amateur and any level pro. One last thing: a lot of people are comparing low light focusing to other brands. Personally I have yet to have a situation where the focus wouldn't be dead on. It's also fast enough for 90% of scenes you'll get to work with. I photographed over 750 weddings in my life and many, many different commercial jobs so - yes, I know what I'm talking about. Thanks so much for reading and happy shooting!

This camera is being replaced by a new model, so buy it while it is on clearance! It's a full frame camera that uses the Leica L mount. This means that there are many lens manufacturers with supporting lenses, including Leica, if you decide that you want to upgrade to premium glass. There are some nice lenses in the Sigma, Lumix/Panasonic, and other brands. The camera's viewfinder is a game changer for mirrorless lenses, at least from my experience. It comes very close to the SLR experience of a viewfinder. It makes focusing with manual focus lenses that much easier. One VERY important note. I got this camera in 2025, but it is still shipping with Firmware version 1.0. You need to update this firmware as soon as possible as it will not support CFexpress memory cards without the update. Fortunately I had seen this problem before with my Nikon D850, but it didn't come up at the top of the list in a Google search.

Panasonic makes amazing cameras and the S1R is the flagship stills camera, but also has excellent video specs. It's a large camera, but feels good in the hand if you like large cameras. One of the best sensor ratings in the category.
