    • Image Sensor Size: 35mm Full Frame (36 x 24 mm)
    • Effective Pixels: 44.3 megapixels (The actual number of pixels which make up the viewable image.)
    • Standardized Video Resolution: 8K (4320p) (An approximated measurement of the product’s video resolution. This may not be the exact resolution of the product, which may be slightly more or less when using a pixel-by-pixel measurement.)
  • General
    • Brand: Panasonic
    • Model Number: DC-S1RM2BODY
    • Product Name: Lumix S1RII
    • Color: Black
    • Camera Model Family: Panasonic Lumix S1RII
    • Digital Camera Type: Mirrorless Camera Body Only
  • Imaging
    • Image Sensor Type: CMOS (CCD and CMOS are the two main technologies used in image sensors. CCD, the older of the two types, turns analog light signals into digital pixels. This conversion happens without distortion, resulting in high-quality images. Newer CMOS sensors use transistors at each pixel to move electrical charges. CMOS sensors are typically less expensive, but also require more light to create distortion-free images.)
    • Image Sensor Size: 35mm Full Frame (36 x 24 mm)
    • Total Pixels: 44 megapixels (Generally, the more pixels, the higher the image resolution and the finer the detail that can be seen.)
    • Image Resolution (Display): 1.84 (Refers to the number of pixels, both horizontally and vertically, used to either capture an image or display it. The higher the resolution the finer the image details.)
    • Zoom Capability: true (This function allows for magnification of the subject.)
    • Digital Zoom: None (A digital zoom is accomplished electronically, with no adjustment of the camera's optics, and no optical resolution gained in the process. The existing data is not enhanced or added to, merely displayed at a lower resolution, thereby giving an illusion of an enlarged image.)
    • In-Camera Image Stabilization: true (This feature helps reduce image blurring from camera motion. In-camera stabilization means the image sensor itself moves to counteract detected motion.)
    • Low Light/High Sensitivity: true (High sensitivity digital imaging devices are designed to work in low light conditions to produce a high dynamic range image.)
    • Image File Format(s): MOV, MP4, Linear PCM, RAW, HEVC (Standardized software format(s) of storing digital images. The type of format chosen for capturing and compressing the image can determine quality, level of detail, and storage space required.)
  • Focus
    • Autofocus: true (Allows the camera to automatically focus through the lens, rather than by adjusting the lens manually.)
    • Eye Autofocus (Eye AF): true (Automatically seeks out and focuses on the subject's eye and holds it as the camera and subject move and as the photographer shoots at high frame rates.)
    • Number of Autofocus Points (Up To): 779
  • Exposure Control
    • Shutter Speeds: 1/8000 (The length of time the shutter remains open when the shutter release is activated, expressed in fractions of seconds. The longer the shutter is open, the more light that is able to be captured by the camera sensor.)
    • Minimum ISO: 80 (ISO is the measurement of a camera image sensor's light sensitivity. When there is plenty of light, using the lowest ISO setting available will typically result in a higher quality image.)
    • Maximum ISO: 51200 (ISO is the measurement of a camera image sensor's light sensitivity. In low-light environments, using a higher ISO setting helps to capture a sharp, bright image.)
    • Maximum Expandable ISO: 102400 (ISO is the measurement of a camera image sensor's light sensitivity. Expandable ISO settings use software to simulate brighter images than the device's native ISO range is capable of capturing.)
    • Brightness Control: true (Allows the camera to adjust the brightness of a captured image for optimal exposure.)
    • Burst Mode: true (Also referred to as continuous shooting. This feature captures multiple shots in rapid succession.)
    • Burst Rate: 40 frames per second
    • Self Timer: true
    • Self-Timer Delay: 10 seconds, 2 seconds
    • Shooting Modes: single, burst, burst 2, time lapse, high res mode, and self timer (Exposure modes employed by the photographer to control the optimal aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and other settings for capturing specific subjects/scenes. Examples include Aperture-Priority, Macro, and Manual modes.)

    • Aspect Ratio: 3:2 (The measurement of the width of a screen compared to the height of a screen, expressed as a ratio.)
    • Screen Resolution: 1.84 (Screens come in a range of resolutions (measured in pixels, horizontal x vertical). The higher the resolution, the greater the picture quality.)

A Photo Centric Camera with Promising Capabilities

As a long-time Panasonic user, I was eager to get my hands on the new S1Rii, and it hasn't disappointed. Right out of the box, the improvements over the original S1R are noticeable. The autofocus is significantly more accurate and responsive, making capturing those fleeting moments at events or nailing focus in the studio an absolute breeze. This alone is a game-changer. What truly surprised me is how much more fun this camera is to use. The smaller size and lighter weight make a tangible difference during longer shoots. My shoulders and back certainly appreciate it after a full day covering an event! It's also much more convenient to carry around. While the highly anticipated 8K Open Gate and external RAW video features are still on the horizon (slated for release later this year), the S1Rii already boasts excellent upgrades to its available codecs and resolutions. The image quality is stunning, and the flexibility in post-production is fantastic. Panasonic markets this as a hybrid camera, and it certainly has the potential to be a strong contender in that space. However, in its current state, I still find it more beneficial to professional photographers. The incredible detail, robust build quality, and significantly improved autofocus cater directly to our needs. While serious videographers will appreciate the advancements, it currently lacks some of the dedicated film-centric features found in the S1H, such as an Optical Low-Pass Filter (OLPF) and the exceptionally well-managed thermal performance for very long recording sessions. That being said, the S1Rii does offer some compelling advantages for video users, including False Color monitoring, a welcome addition for exposure control. The much less cropped 4K 60p codec is a significant improvement, providing a wider field of view. Furthermore, the advanced cropless Image Stabilization is remarkably effective, delivering smooth handheld footage. Overall, if you're a serious photographer who occasionally dabbles in video, or a hybrid shooter looking for a highly capable camera that leans slightly towards photography, the Panasonic S1Rii is an absolute beast. For under $4,000, it offers a compelling blend of exceptional image quality, vastly improved performance, and promising video features that could evolve even further with future firmware updates. While dedicated cine cameras like the S1H still hold their ground for hardcore filmmakers, the S1Rii strikes an impressive balance and is a joy to work with.

Waited so long for this camera.

Great Camera. Had some issues with temp warnings, and if you are a “fast photographer” (sports, auto/racing, etc), Id skip for the S1II or another stacked sensor option.
