About this product
The music of the guajira is a form of Cuban musica campesina, or Cuban country music, with lyrics that extol the virtues of country life and the lifestyle of the guajira; similar to that of the American cowboy of the old west or the South American gaucho. Guajiros are often sung by a single musician accompanying himself, later joined by other musicians who improvise on the original theme using a rhyme scheme similar to decima poetry. It is a very social music that often incorporates audience participation. Guajira was refined and popularized by the Cuban singer-songwriter and guitarist Guillermo Portabales, whose graceful style has become known as guajira de sal+¦n. Patria Guajira were a group consisting of Cuban emigres living in Miami, whose controversial lyrics and dark humor made them a favorite attraction in the clubs of Little Havana. These wonderful recordings feature singers improvising off each other and shows the remarkable spontaneous creativity of the music of the guajira de salon. Recorded in Miami in the mid-1970's - all selections newly remastered.

The legendary Orquesta Aragon is one of Cuba's longest running charanga orchestras, started in 1939 by Orestes Aragon Cantero in Cienfuegos, Cuba and still performing today. When flautist and gifted composer Richard Egues joined the band in 1954, Aragon's cha-cha sound went international and the band toured the United States and South America. This rare, late 1960's recording features the band at the height of it's powers and stands as a classic example of Afro-Cuban dance music at it's finest. All selections newly remastered.

When Ameen let's rip, as he does in charged, kaleidoscopic bursts throughout, he unleashes a veritable deluge of Afro-Cuban, jazz and post-bop rhythms. JAZZWISE (UK)In the spirit of New York's loft scene of the '70s, master drummer Robby Ameen searched out performance alternatives when faced with the Covid shutdown. Tribeca's decades-old Phillip Williams Poster shop offered space for Ameen to video teach, rehearse and eventually present a weekly series in it's expansive storefront, replete with the world's largest collection of vintage posters to warm the sounds. With his longtime band of Bob Franceschini, Conrad Herwig, Troy Roberts, Edsel Gomez, and Lincoln Goines in tow, Ameen created an intimate neighborhood salon, overflowing with fiery original Afro-Cuban music with deep strains of contemporary hard bop and funk. InchLive at the Poster MuseumInch was recorded and filmed during the last of the series' concerts, the musicians, volunteers and audience all deeply owning the significant collective experience they created.
