About this product
These revelatory films feature Britten with his favored English Chamber Orchestra performing at two very different times of his life, with equal value. Filmed at Christmas 1964, the main program of Mozart's Symphony No.40 and Britten's own Nocturne shows a man in his prime. The Mozart was a particular favorite of Britten's and his admiration for it certainly comes across in the performance.

Legacy Rostropovich & Britten [DIGITAL VIDEO DISC] Released 2012 product/publication from Ica Classics

Andre Previn conducts the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus with Sheila Armstrong, Robert Tear, and John Shirley-Quirk in works by Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, and Bernstein.

This DVD is only the third filmed performance featuring Tennstedt with the BSO to be made available to the public and represents some of the earliest concert footage with this great conductor. Tennstedt has been compared with Barbirolli, Karajan and Klemperer by the Gramophone Classical Music Guide, while BBC Music Magazine described ICA Classics' recent DVD featuring Tennstedt directing the LPO in Mahler 5 as 'epitomizing the combination of immensely detailed precision and overwhelming expressive intensity that Tennstedt's many admirers found so special'. Tennstedt and the BSO formed a close association, together covering much of the Austro-German symphonic tradition, such as the works included on this DVD, which are described by Michael McManus as a 'classic Tennstedt program'. Tennstedt was well known for the depth and animation of his concert performances, to which his studio recordings seldom compare - this DVD provides a rare opportunity to witness the great man in action.
