About this product
Monteverdi's Fourth Book of Madrigals, published in 1603 after an eleven-year gestation, bears witness to the metamorphosis of the madrigal and the rapid evolution of music at the turn of the two centuries. It is also a model of the genre and may be regarded as one of the most innovative and emblematic of it's composer's style. This bold, complex book is the culmination of the application of the precepts of the seconda pratica on the cusp of the seventeenth century. The dedication tells us that some of it's madrigals had been intended for presentation to Duke Alfonso II d'Este (who died in 1597), thus revealing the key influence on this collection of the court of Ferrara, then one of the most sophisticated in Europe and a crucible of musical innovation. Following the of the Vespers, Philippe Herreweghe, a great lover of Italy and it's repertory, accompanied as ever by Collegium Vocale Gent, signs his second recording devoted to Monteverdi on the Phi tag with this Fourth Book of Madrigals. Beethoven composed the oratorio Christus am Ölberge (Christ on the Mount of Olives) in just 'a fortnight, amid all sorts of tumult and other unpleasant and alarming events in my life'. It marked the first time since the two 'imperial cantatas' of 1790, the Cantata on the Death of the Emperor Joseph II WoO 87 and the Cantata on the Accession of Leopold II WoO 88, that he had embarked on a multi-movement vocal work. Christus am Ölberge was also Beethoven's first composition on a religious subject and was destined to remain his only oratorio. Album Tracks 1. Christus am Ölberge, Op. 85~Introduzione 2. Johannes Brahms wrote well over 300 lieder, including his arrangements of German folk songs, partsongs and choral lieder. Considering how long he carried a song around in his head before writing and publishing the final version, this is an astonishing amount. This 2-album set presents a selection from Brahms' huge lied repertoire, which not only gives an impression of his importance to music history up to the present day and what a perfect lied composer he was, but also reveals what a cheerful, young-at-heart and humorous person he must have been. The selection of songs and duets is arranged chronologically (1853-1896) and includes all phases of his life in which the lied played a central role, thus allowing the development of the German-language song in the time after Beethoven, Schubert and Schumann to be clearly traced. The pianist Jan Schultsz plays on a wonderful original J.B. Streicher fortepiano from 1871, a model on which Brahms also preferred to play. The singers are Rachel Harnisch, Marina Viotti and Yannick Debus - young singers who have already celebrated successes in concert and in major opera houses. Album Tracks 1. Heimkehr Op. 7 NR. 6 2.
