About this product
This is a Christmas album that has a sense of place; clearly identifying the Chorale as both American and from a border state with Mexico; and something for everyone whether they prefer serious or light festive fare. There is Mexican influence in the repertoire choices; which include Catalan folksongs as well as Hispanic Renaissance music. It includes a commission by Cecilia McDowall; written for Christmas 2021; new arrangements of all tracks and also some contemporary Christmas favourites such as Sleigh Ride and Jingle Bells. This marks the Chorale's return to recording following an 8-year hiatus; and their first album with Signum Records. InchFestive repertoire plays an important role in the performance cycle of every choir; and it felt fitting to begin our journey with a Christmas recording that established a sense of place for the ensemble we chose to record repertoire that is all American or Hispanic in origin; save for the newly-commissioned piece by Cecilia McDowall that was written to mark the centenary of our home in Phoenix; Trinity Cathedral. Our aim is to translate the warmth of Arizona into our sound; to convey the rhetoric of every text; and celebrate the good health of the American Choral Tradition.Inch - Christopher Gabbitas

The critically acclaimed, Arizona-based Phoenix Chorale originally focused on music of the Renaissance and baroque periods, but today is equally dedicated to the creation and performance of new music. On this disc the Choir performs choral works, and settings of sacred texts by the Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo. When he first heard Gjeilo's 'Ubi caritas,' Charles Bruffy was instantly hooked, finding the music 'refreshing and magnetic'. Bruffy brought Gjeilo's music to the Chorale and it's audiences, and the response was immediate. Soon after, Gjeilo was invited to be the Chorale's first Composer-in-Residence. 'Phoenix,' a setting of the Agnus Dei, is dedicated to Charles Bruffy and the Phoenix Chorale in honour of it's fiftieth anniversary. When Gjeilo first visited the choir in Arizona, he had never been to the desert before, and the 'quiet beauty and barrenness of the landscape' moved him deeply. He describes 'Phoenix' as 'symphonic in nature... one of those pieces where the text is very much the servant of the music, not the other way around'. In contrast, 'Northern Lights' takes it's inspiration from Gjeilo's homeland, Norway, and the 'terrible beauty' of the natural phenomenon that may be observed there. The music reflects the powerful and electric quality of the northern lights, which must have seemed both mesmerising and terrifying to people in the past when no one knew what they were, and superstition prevailed. The Phoenix Chorale made it's first appearance on Chandos in 2004 with 'Shakespeare in Song.' Since then it has released several recordings on the tag, most notably the Grammy Winning 'Spotless Rose Hymns to the Virgin Mary.'
